Hello

I am close to launching my new online clothes store. My question is can a beginner set up a decent Pay per click campaign with adwords? Or do you really need to pay professional to do this?

Best Wishes

If you're only going to be risking a small amount on paid search, then employing a pro really isn't an option. The best you can hope to achieve would come from you quickly gaining a rudimentary knowledge of PPC.

If you're going to be spending 1,000+ each month then consider getting someone on board who specializes in PPC.

Sometimes the most efficient method would be to hire someone to set it up for you, make a few tweaks and then leave you on your own to adjust bids / budget each month. By eliminating the ongoing monthly management fee, you will eliminate the painful part of the expense while retaining the most advantageous set-up component.

Check out the PPC advice and other online marketing advice here. I'd also think about asking a person with knowledge of PPC or an agency to help you out. Many in PPC will give away advice for free, and in the event you need professional help, you can utilise this relationship.

If you going to use adwords you need to understand the basics to save you going bust. Make sure you set budgets and length of the campaigns you do. Do low and short for a 2 weeks and this will teach you a lot. Don't accept anything that google offers you in the way of keywords.

If you want some cheaper options for try while learning that try http://www.outadwords.com for some ideas.

Ecommerce Tracking is the key, anyone can set campaign up (and waste money on non performing keywords) the key is setting up the eCommerce tracking so you know your exact ROI for each keyword (and turn off those which aren't giving a positive ROI). Plenty of advice on the net/forums of you have the time to learn it.
