PowerPoint Presentation Business idea

Hello All,

I am thinking about offering PowerPoint presentations for businesses and wanted a little input as regards whether this is a type of service you, as business owners, would use. There will be many situations where an administrator will be responsible for creating PowerPoint slides. Some owners have the skills to do their own. So to this end, do you think that this is a viable idea? There are also sites such as Freelancer; Odesk and People Per Hour where designers are hired on a project basis. Whilst I plan to include my portfolio and bid for work on these sites, I am concerned that there are so many designers, from across the globe, bidding for work. I'd have to consider how I can stand out and how I can find business. Might it be a good idea to specialise in niche markets? Or perhaps within a particular demographic?

This type of work appeals to me as I really enjoy working in PowerPoint and have good layout skills; can incorporate video, sound, slide animation etc. I am also very experienced in Photoshop, Illustrator and proficient in Final Cut Pro for video editing so can deliver files in MP4 (video) format as well as self-running .pptx files.

With the above in mind, I'm not touting for business; views on the viability of this idea would be much more helpful. I would, however, for the purpose of building up my portfolio, be willing to offer free presentations to UKBF members if I think the idea is a 'go-er'.

Thanks in advance
Nic

I don't think there is much demand. Big companies have whole departments to create marketing materials, if the presentation isn't for marketing the basics that any administrator can do will suffice. Small companies will make do with the tools as they are, 90% of a presentation is thinking about the content which is the one thing you can't do, they are not hard to use or occasionally outsource, but with the number of freelancers in the third world ready to pounce on this easy work at less than £2 an hour, I can't see this as a viable UK business.

I personally think you are better focusing on more valuable media skills you mention.

Not sure I mean I myself want to get a book style digital catalogue done which can be done for £10 on those sites. I think a career utilising those platforms is extremely viable but perhaps with a range of offerings. The hours worked and value of earnings data on sites like upwork is impressive and I see some upstarts creating agencies and developing teams within those platforms. I'd likely use a service with a western contact person who then delegates work to trusted co workers. That is precisely how they build the teams. Some of those teams have 100k earnings it is interesting and growing.

Thanks for your reply. I've seen a fair few 'Western' designers on those sites bidding for work for amounts that I'd be happy to work for. They also have good feedback ratings from satisfied customers. Perhaps I need to take a closer look at what these designers offer that those in India don't. The idea of being in a 'team' of people is quite appealing.
