Posting Aerosol Can to America

You are definitely not allowed to send aerosols with Royal Mail (even in the UK) and I struggled to find a courier who could accomodate. I'm sure they must exist but will probably be expensive.

Totally untrue, royal mail accept aerosols no problem, as for couriers we have used Fastways, APC, DHL, Interlink/DPD, and now Business Post all were asked, checked with HQ and came back and said yes they could and did carry aerosols.

I was asking for America as i couldnt find any info on any website

Hi

One of our business sells aerosols and the law is that aerosols cannot legally be shipped by airmail whether that is via RM or independent courier. You must send by surface mail. If, like us, you potentially offer combinations where an aerosol could be purchased along with non-aerosol products it is useful to place a note either on the individual product page or at checkout advising customers of the law and urging that purchases of aerosol and non-aerosol products be dividied into separate orders. This way you do not compromise the airmail delivery of the non-aerosol products.

I hope that helps.

there are no real issues with sending aerosols to other countries via air. However they need to be packed correctly and marked / labelled acordingly.

Courier companies like Fedex can take dangerous goods such as aerosols but as mentioned above it needs to be handed over to them ready to ship (i.e. Packed to IATA regulations)

it wont be cheap but is possible.

I have had first hand experience with this.

Royal Mail officially do not handle aerosols full stop. They seem to let inland UK ones slide if they aren't too blatant. But they won't ship them to Northern Ireland, or by Airmail or surface mail. The latter is because they frequently use surface mail as a "space filler" on underused airmail flights.

Courier companies will generally accept them for UK mainland shipment (but check with them first...), but NOT shipment by air in any form. This includes the "big boys" like Fedex and DHL. To ship them by air, you will need to find a specialist company. DGI (Dangerous Goods International) used to be one, but I don't think they exist any more.

The reason is quite simple; airfreight can be shipped in unpressurised cargo holds, including in some passenger aircraft (seregated from the pressurised hold used for tourist luggage). There is a significant risk that an aerosol can, not being designed for such a pressure differential could explode. Would YOU want to be responsible for bringing down a jumbo in mid-Atlantic ?

Also, don't think you can get away with it. Other countries (eg China) may be more lax, but all airfreight from the UK is either X-Rayed or shipped as "Known Freight" under strict DOT regulation.

I worked for a courier company a few years ago that tried to get away with it. For 6 aerosol cans, they were fined £30,000. Could your business absorb such a fine ?

its the first time someone has tried to buy them from the states, we do about 1,500 a month in UK, but this can is designed by an artist so is collectable

Is it the contents or just the can that your customer needs?

You could empty a can and drill a 0.5mm hole in it ;)

It wouldn't be pressurised then.:)
