Biddle and Webb (Birmingham) have an auction, I think once a month, selling off stuff for the West Midlands police, plus I heard they now do pawned stuff that hasn't been collected from various pawn shops. In Yorkshire, there's Bidders Auction Room, up in Leeds, and Morphets (Harrogate) who have done police auctions .

SimonCharles auctioneers (Ashton under Lyne, near Manchester) sell a fair bit of new/liquidation stuff. They could probably point you in the right direction for who handles police auctions in their neck of the woods.

There's a guide called the government auction handbook that may be worth a look. It's available online : jwg7infobooks.com.

Would also be interested in finding out locations in London/Essex of liquidation stock auctions. Always love a bargain especially with office furniture and display stands/exhibition jumble.

Mmm, one I can think of in London that would be well worth a visit or two (might have to go a few times to pick out the value lots) is Greasbys, in Tooting. They get some really interesting lots because they have the contract to auction off all the unclaimed baggage that comes through heathrow airport. I think they take out the really good stuff, but I like the lots that go something like "black trolley suitcase with gents clothing...." They do have a lot of new stuff too, mostly clothes.

They also auction off the contents of storage lockers for landlords. You know, the kind of thing where people put stuff into storage and then decide it's not worth keeping so just stop paying for the storage. Or they leave the flat but leave a whole lot of stuff behind. And also for bailiffs.

If I lived in London, or even was going down for a visit, I would definitely check this auction out.

Bristol
I started going to an auction in Bristol about 10 years ago. Police, airport, liquidation etc. I've pretty much stopped going now because it's so rare I buy anything. Stuff goes for far too much nowadays. I used to buy a a lot of nice police recovered bikes, but it staggers me what they're going for nowadays.

My advice is buy unusual stuff that other people won't be thinking about. The best bargain I ever saw was a light aeroplane. It had a guide price of £12,000 or something. When it was auctioned no one was bidding, obviously no one had even considered buying the aeroplane. It ended up going for something ridiculous like £2,000 and the guy that bought it didn't look like he was planning on buying an aeroplane that day!
