Ben The Plumber

Hello my name is Ben Amors I have been told about this place by a good friend. I was going to say I am in a dilemma. I hope some of you experienced professionals in business can help me out. I currently work for a company but I have advertised I am getting loads of business from recommendations on my own from previous clients who are introducing me to new business. The problem is I currently earn employed by a company around 50,000 - 75,000 per annum. If I go at it alone I am very confident because I look at it on the case if the company paying me that what is the company making from me . I will appreciate some of your views & comments

Many Thanks

Ben, rarely do people become rich working for someone else. Having said that there is a lot to be said for a regular salary at the end of each month. You maybe the best plumber this side of nagasaki but being good at your product doesn't mean you will be good in business.

It is a decision you need to make based on your own personal circumstances. Think about how you will pay the mortgage should you have a quiet month or even put bread on the table. But i must be honest from the tradespeople i know many of them have gone from working for them selves to getting a job because the phone has stopped ringing in the last year or so since this credit crunch episode.

You may have a few people wanting your services right now but will that hold true in 3 months time? You need to be realistic and have a plan B ideally with a reasonable amount of liquid cash to help you in any quiet times. There is nothing like financial pressure to put a strain on married/family life. I speak from experiance on this.

Hi Ben

I wouldn't mention what company you are working for either, these threads are easily picked up by Google.

I hear what your saying. The problem is I have mortgage for 800,000 and my wife is a psychiatric. The problem is I get so much private work its to much for one person each Saturday and Sunday. Saying that the mortgage ends in 3 years

I have a number of friends who are plumbers, and I would say that 70K PA would be exceptionally high earnings, unless you are thinking of going the route of massive call-out fees and borderline rip-off costs.

(I think it was the Sun that popularised the myth of plumbers on 80K a year, leading to everyone deciding to train up).

Addiitionally, it is notoriously difficult to collect cash, with customers coming up with all sorts of reasons not to pay. Managing this is both time consuming and bad for cashflow.

I'm not trying to put you off, as there is certainly a living to be made, but I think your expectations may be a little too high.

have you thought about going "part time"

do 3-4 days a week with your employer and devote 4-3 days building your own business

if the take up is good, and the money is there and you thijnk running it yourself is what you'd want - then go for it.

what motivates you to be self employed? Just the money? Have you thought about all the extra things you have to look after if it's your own business? have you the skills to do them? Just how much private work do you get? it might fill up your weekends - but is there enough to fill up the rest of the week when you are earning for your employer?

We can add-up mate... Your numbers don't hang together... You owe 800k on your mortgage finishing in three years? Well over 22k a month assuming it's interest free... Your wifes a psycho??? :|:| WTF! Trust me! if you went out with a female Doctor you'd know EXACTLY what she does! (don't ask me how I know this!)

Earlier someone tripped you up by kidding you on you could do £1K a week.. According to your claims you're already exceeding that....

Hey! You quoted the numbers! You took on an 800K mortgage in 1987???
You and your Mrs were on £250K a year back then???

Be as upset as you like. People aren't buying it simply because the numbers you're spouting don't add up...

Well if you must know we have kept making the mortgage bigger as buying houses for more ££, so when we first started never had 800k. I dontthink I will be using this fourm again now for simple fact attitude to others is very bad and bullying like.

It's interesting Jamie how you started off on this one writing in reasonable English and finish up trying (as usual) to disguise your identity by degenerating into semi-literate nonsense... Same old same old... (yawn!)

Paul's driver sends double hugs..... And yes; the Clyde's looking particularly choppy tonight...

Give it up; you fool no-one... Not for long at least...
