Hi there

I am about to start banging my head on the desk, but thought I would check for help here first. I accidentally associated a programme extension (.prn) with a programme and would like to remove this association. I have searched for this info and can't find any way to do it. I don't want to associate it with another programme, just remove the association. Please help!

1. Download unassoc.zip from this site here:
www winhelponline com/articles/231/1/
2. Save the file to Desktop
3. Extract the contents to a folder and run the file unassoc.exe
4. Select .prn file type from the list
5. Click "Remove file association (User)

Hope this helps.

Hi,

There is a program I use that can remove file associations. However because I have not posted more than 15 times I cannot post the link.

PM me and I will send you more details.

If you would like me to do this for you then I can remotely connect to your computer and do this for you for a special price of £5.

If you or anyone else are interested I am about to promote a special offer to attract new customers for computer remote support.

I will offer a reduced fee of £10 for the first session (fixed rate, no matter how long it takes to solve) then all other sessions are £15 for first 30mins and £7.50 for each additional 30mins required. This is very cheap way to get your computer problems fixed without you having to wait for computer repairman or uplugging it and taking it to a pc shop where you cannot see what isbeing done to it and get charged ££££!

This Offer is not live at the moment but if you are interested PM me and I will send you more details to my website.

regards

Paul

Please ignore it, I didn't read that you don't want to associate it with another program.

1. Click on "Start"

2. Go to "Default Programs"

3. Click on "associate a file type or protocol with program"

4. Wait till it finds all file types

5. Locate " .prn"

6. Select it and Click on " Change program"
7. Change it to what you want.

I hope it helps

Unfortunately that will only help you change extension, rather than remove extensions, because to do that you need to use the command line or edit the registry manually..

Microsoft never made it easy to do this in Vista/7 for some unknown reason.

Not quite true, i havnt got a machine with Vista on to check, but if you choose the program that you have associated the file with, and then uncheck that extension from its list of associated file extensions, and if that it the only app it is associated with, then it will no longer have anything associated with it.

lol, i dont think ive ever said associated so many times!

This wont work, you can only change the association and not remove it. I have both vista and xp in front of me and can confirm this. The techrepublic link refers to changing the association and not removing it. In my experience the program that is linked here is the only way. I have also tried editing the registry removing the FileExt key totally and rebooting and it still wont work.

THANK YOU! Once again the help from this forum is just brilliant.

I downloaded the app and ran it as instructed, but it stays dimmed on the .prn that I am trying to unassociate. Now this is the extension that I associated with photoshop and I still can't unassociate it 'cause it won't let me. I am really ready to scream.

Unfortunately that doesn't work on Vista / 7. I have both operating systems running now, this is why people have resorted to making little applications like the ones linked to above.

If you're up for the challenge, you can remove the association in the registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\whatever\OpenWithList <-- just delete all entries in there.

Be careful though. Editing your registry can cause problems. Only do it if you're not a big wuss.

AND EXPORT IT TO A BACKUP FILE BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING!
File > Export !!!
