I think that the armed forces started running courses to train as locksmiths a couple of years ago which has significantly increased the competition. Time to really get stuck into electronic systems I would suggest. Take that forward a little and you go for resetting codes on radios/cds etc.

What about an un-clamping service in major city cntres. That would go down a wow.
I would attend if i had a call out, dont know if its against the law to do so, but if it helps some one out of paying 100's to get it removed i would do this, my fee would be only £40 to £45 pounds.

I have no insight into the locksmith business (other than the fact that I live in the house formerly owned by the royally appointed locksmith to LizII) ... but most respondents have not used a locksmith ... so where is your business proposition?
if it is 'call me when you've locked yourself out' I think you are sunk.
If it is 'call me to make your house extremely secure' - I think you have a business.
In my case we have great locks which all work from one key for mortice, one for all patio doors - they designed simplicity with security - maybe there is something in that as a marketing angle for you?

As most site are routinely patrolled, especially the ones with clamps attached, do you think a clamper is gonna let you stroll up and unclamp a lock, he/she will just put more clamps on, and for your information alot of the clamps we put on are from a phone call from our clients for people who are persistant offender, who have been given POLITE NOTICES, VERBALLY ASKED TO MOVE ECT, so you crack on with you false sense of justice

I think this idea of yours is great -

don't get left behind".

Where abouts are you? Anywhere near Hertford and I will ask for this post to be deleted. There are a lot of companies offering questionable training. They train you to do clever lock picking etc. This gives guys lots of confidence so that they think they are fully experienced. Unfortunately there is not enough 'clever stuff' needed on a daily basis to earn you a living. I can't tell how far along you are and I'm not trying to put a downer on your research. Hence the reply. Glad to hear training was with a MLA member. I'm a company and individual member and support their aims and Customer Charter. The Master Locksmiths Association is the oldest trade association and not owned and operated by a locksmith company. My advice would be to go for it only if you can afford it. By that I mean if you have financial responsibilities think carefully before jumping in. Its very crowded in here and experience is what makes you the biggest profit and that takes time to acquire.

Good luck! and let us know how you get on.

One good plan would be to speak to local landlords/estate agents/property developers. My dad is forever having to change the locks on places where the tenants have abandoned and yet changed all the locks.
