Hi all,
Right I need to get my hands on a good payroll software which does, tax, NI, holidays, ssp, etc.
It will be used for my security officers on hourly rate. I want system that I can add the officers shifts into system for the month. I also want to print myself on correct payslips.

Been looking at Iris system but does cost a lot.

As you can tell this is all new to my as it's a start up company with only 3 officers at the moment due to winning the new tender.

Thanks

I would recommend Moneysoft. The alternative is to use a payroll company. Are you confident about employment rights such as holiday entitlement, SSP etc?

    Another vote for Moneysoft

It's the software used by my firm to run our own and clients payrolls and works very well.

We used to do the payroll ourselves, but it was such a weight on our shoulders, if we made a mistake it could affect our staff's futures, and even accountants get it wrong at times (see below for an example).

We therefore handed it over to a payroll firm that had plenty of insurance - just in case. We didn't want the same thing happening to our staff as did one of our friends...

Our friend was six months from retiring, then something happened that alerted her employers to check her pay and tax. It turned out that for some time they had been deducting too little tax from her - the sums had been worked out by the accountants (and they're a large well know firm in Lewes). The upshot was our friend had to work for another two years to pay off the tax.

Was it the accountant who made the mistake or HMRC??

It sounds to me like HMRC issued an incorrect tax code.

If the accountant was at fault the client should have made a claim on their Professional Indemnity insurance.

It's some years ago now, and I didn't know the specifics, but I know the employers blamed the accountants (of course, this might have been false I guess). All I know is they ended up working another 2 years.

If it was incorrect tax code though, surely someone should have picked that up.

Very often accountants get blamed for HMRC errors and delays ;)

Whether the accountant should have picked this up depends on the terms of engagement, but if they have been instructed to run a company payroll and are supplied with a tax code for an employee it would be very unusual for them to check an employees tax code. To check a tax code you would generally be acting as an accountant for that individual and dealing with that persons tax affairs which would be a separate engagement to running the company payroll.

The employee will have been sent a notice from HMRC setting out what their tax code was and how it was calculated and will have seen the tax code on the payslips and P60.

    .....

We let CA Payroll deal with our staff's wages, etc. Took a huge weight of our minds.

Glad to hear you get on well with your payroll company using a good accountant or payroll company is indeed an option worth considering.
