Morning folks,

As part of what seems to be my ever expanding role, it looks like I may be taking on the companies payroll (we currently outsource it all).

I have done some payroll before in a previous life, but it was as simple as plugging the figures into Sage and hitting go, this time I would like to better understand the calculations behind the numbers and generally have a better understanding of it all.

I've been looking into joining the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals. Is anyone here a member? I would most likely do the National Payroll Certificate course as it seems to fit what i'm after. Again, has anyone done this? Anyone recommend any other payroll professional bodies for me to cast an eye over?

Hi Walkol,

I'm a full member of the CIPP, have been for the last few years.

You are definitely right that it is a good idea to learn what happens behind the payroll system. It is a real benefit to be able to explain to employees what is going on with their tax affairs as well as be able to ensure what the system is doing.

I did my professional diploma in payroll management (now called foundation degree on the CIPP) through a company called payroll qualifications, now Learn Payroll i believe.

The qualification through them was suitable for CIPP to grant me full membership which means I could put MCIPPdip after my name if I felt like it

Some good benefits of the CIPP are their magazine which is good to catch up on what is going on, their email newsletter and their website is a good source of information especially their members only section which link members in the same business sector to discuss and problems they may have.

If there is anything else you would like to know please do shout.

Thanks for that, really helpful.

One further question if you will, I see with membership you get access to a full advise service, have you used this and if so, what it is like? Good? It's probably not a big issue as our existing payroll providers could offer assistance if we require, but would still be good to know.

Very good! I've only used it two or maybe three times in the last two years but they are very quick at getting back to you if you leave a message or if you speak on the phone it is very informative. I really can't fault the service.
The website used to be a bit poor but since they became chartered and launched a new website the content has really improved.

Ps I'm not on commission ;)
