Hi Poppy

There's many options, yes you don't need a phone line- but it depends what type of terminal you choose.

Removing any particular brand payment terminals come in three different 'flavors'

  • GPRS/GSM Terminals- They have a mobile SIM card inside them, just like your mobile phone! So if you have mobile phone signal, then you have a functioning terminal and no phone line needed. These types are arguably the most mobile.
  • PSTN Terminal - These are the ones which require a phone line, what you referred to in your post. You may have been in a lovely local shop 'has to wait' because someone was on the phone and because these Terminal types can't allow a phone call and payment at the same time on the line.
  • IP Terminals - You require a broadband connection, and the (usually yellow) Ethernet cable (Cat5) goes into the back from your broadband router. The payment is sent/authorised across your broadband connection. So you need to have broadband already for this. If you're a mobile events business outdoors, this wouldn't be practical.
  • Bluetooth/Infrared Terminals - These types are 'wireless' but just like the wireless phones you might have in your house, they have to be 'in-range' of a base station and also you need a broadband connection just like the PSTN type Terminal

Understand that terminals may come with one or more types; e.g. you get get payment terminals which are both GPRS/GSM and have IP as a backup.

Choosing a terminal provider and payment processor

It used to be the case that you could buy your terminal out right, and then choose a payment broker separately. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore sadly, instead they're 'rented' from the provider.

Perhaps the best advice is to not focus too much on price, but on the support side of things if it goes wrong. How long will you be waiting on the phone if you've got a queue of customers?

The major manufactures of the terminals appear to be Ingenico and Verifone, I do not know who manufactures the Square/Paypal/etc type terminals but they all look suspiciously the same :)

For the least hassle and expense, you therefore might want to find a happy balance between expense and good quick on-call support for if/when that's needed.
