Does anyone have any experience with payment gateways which allow non hotels and hire car companies, to pre-authorise credit cards such that credit can be blocked and later charged if necessary. I have a business which lends out valuable items, I dont want to take the money upfront but just block an amount of credit should the item not be returned. So far I have found paypal do this but only for 3 days. Does anyone know of other gateways which are more flexible? Thx.

Speak to Cardsave, they work with Streamline for the merchant account. Streamline are pretty flexible these days and pre-auth is held for up to 2 weeks (or 10 working days).

Thx for the response. That's interesting you say that because I already have use Streamline and they explicitly told me that only the hotel and car hire business can pre-authorise cards. I was always reasonably sure that this wasn't entirely accurate!

the first question that any merchant provider will ask in this case is "what are you hiring out?". this will be to assess how high a risk the business is.

With Barclays ePDQ you can do this. We have this facility and we are printers (not hotel or car hire). It costs £20 per month plus the usual percentage.

The pre-authorisation lasts dependant on the card type and issuer and is normally anywhere from 3-10 days. Unfortunately this at card scheme level and not controlled by the processor. However collection transactions can be sent in under the original auth code and should be honoured by the issuer. I have seen a handful of times where it is not but this is exceedingly rare.
