Payment Gateway Advice

Hello,
Currently we run a website which takes payments in two ways: Paypal Website Payments Standard and Bank Transfers.
Recently we have had some bad experience with Paypal - they appear to side with the customer no matter how fraudulent the customer is and of course their service is rather expensive.
I am trying to find a replacement payment gateway.
If I describe my business perhaps someone might be able to give me some advice on the best gateway.
We are a LTD Company
We are selling bridal accessories and occasion wear
Our items range in price from £10 to £310 and the average item is £61
Out average sale is around £80 including postage
We see on average 100 sales a month
We have an HSBC business account
We don't have a merchant account
We use Kashflow for our bookkeeping
Prestashop for our cart (although I can write a payment module so it doesn't matter if one doesn't exist already)

Any thoughts or suggestions ?

I have a client who migrated all his payment handling to Skrill (Moneybookers) and, whilst they were a little rigid at the outset getting limits etc agreed (I didn't see this as a problem, more a nice security feature tbh), they have been excellent.

His description to me was "I wish I had done it years ago, it has paid for itself many times over already".

His items would range similarly to yours in price, and maybe close on quantities too.

Hello wildchief.

I think you will find that a lot of payment gateways will be very interested in your business!

I hope you will consider Nochex.com as it will be a good fit for your business:
  • We don't charge for chargebacks and we back the merchant in disputes
  • No long contract
  • Merchant account + payment gateway in one package
  • Pay-as-you-go
  • Low transaction rate
  • Standard integration with Prestashop
And, of course, all the regular benefits of your own account manager, telephone and email contact etc.

If you need anymore information, please just ask.

Good luck!
- Peter (I work for Nochex)

Hello

I have been reading about cardsave as the prices look good but i have heard things about termination fees and auto renewing contracts. What do i need to know about this. I am the sort of person if I like a company i tend to stay with them but I really would prefer the option to leave if necessary

I would recommend giving CardSave a call. :)

Specialise and cater towards the SME industry, providing low rates and monthly costs.

But I am also biased!

For NOCHEX does a user need a "nochex" account or can it be transparent - they just simply input their details in a payment form on my website and hit "pay now" or whatever?

Buyers / shoppers don't need a Nochex account.

It works a bit like PP - shoppers go to a page on our website to pay and as you say they enter their card details and then pay. The payment page can be customised to look just like the rest of your website, so they may not even notice they have left your website.

After the transaction is complete they are returned to your website.

You can do far better than this. Remember that most payment gateway providers will also help you set up a merchant account. Unlike a lot of our competitors we don't have one preferred merchant acquirer that we recommend, instead we constantly monitor the market and recommend whoever is offering the best rates at the time.

They are 12 month rolling contracts. You have to provide 30 days notice before the renewal date if you ever wanted to close it without incurring any fees.

But like you say though - great prices and rates. If the service is good, why bother switch anyway? :)

Typically with a real merchant account, you are charged a set pence (p) per debit card transaction or a percentage (%) of the transaction for a credit card. For example if your base rates were 1.5% and 20p (they may be lower or higher, but a realistic example). On your £74 transaction, if your customers paid by debit card you would only be charged a flat 20p and nothing else. If they paid via credit card and your credit card rate was 1.5% you would be charged £1.11 rather than £2.85 with PayPal. Either way, it's more profit in your back pocket!
