Hi, does anyone know why when filling in the tax return online its asked
'Our records show that your 2010-11 PAYE Notice of Coding includes an adjustment for tax underpaid' ?
If I put £0.00 will they query this as there was no underpayment? The last 2 years have been paper returns so has an error been made last year?

No, they will not query it.

It is just a standard question asked when preparing the Return online.

I've never completed an online return, but that doesn't look like a standard question to me. As it's linked to the OPs SA record, it looks more like a statement that there is an underpayment.

OP: can you find your notice of coding for 2010-11? Is there a restriction for tax owed for an earlier year - 2008-09 most likely. If so the figure needs to be entered.

If there was a deduction and you complete the form without entering it, HMRC will automatically amend the form to show the correct figure and adjust your calculation

So the question says "our records show . .. " even when they don't? Wonderful!

That's why accountants pay to use somebody else's software!
