Partnerships Between Spouses of Differing Vocations

Hi,

My wife is employed as a GP but will also be doing some additional freelance medical consultancy from next month. She will therefore become employed and self-employed at once. This may push her personal income into a higher tax band.

I am already self-employed starting up a church consultancy project and have a very low (to non-existent) income.

We are therefore considering setting up an ordinary business partnership to equalise our incomes and keep us both in a lower tax bracket.

Q1. Does anyone know if this totally normal, sensible, and legal or is it incredibly naughty, nasty and forbidden for some reason?

Q2. Does anyone know any government or 'official' websites that offer concrete guidance on this?

Thanks for your contribution - much appreciated.
