Hi everybody,

Would really appreciate some advice on what to do in this situation..

1. I came across what I consider to be an amazing digital based product online - there are not many like it.

2. I noticed that they have an 'affiliate/partner' working for them (referring sales to them and takinga commission), but I don't think they have an official affiliate programme, because 1. It isn't mentioned anywhere on their website, and 2. I searched high and low for it on Google and most/ if not all affiliate networks - again no where to be seen.

3. I sent them an e-mail saying how I like their product because of xyz reason, and wanted to know if they have an official affiliate program as I noticed they have an affiliate working for them and that I would be able to send targeted leads to their website. Someone e-mailed back saying they had forwarded my message to management and they will be in touch.

4. Management contacts me with this exact e-mail:

Dear James,

I'm Susan, Communication Manager at xyz and Jessica forwarded your message to me. First of all, thanks a lot for reaching out to us.
We're always open to new collaborations so I'm excited to hear what you have in mind!
I look forward to hearing your ideas regarding a collaboration with us.
All the best,
Susan

5. I message back saying basically I can send targeted traffic to their website through a combination of SEO, video and offline marketing. I then said, please could you let me know some information about your product e.g. average front end sale, average conversion rate etc... I had a list of about 8 questions and also mentioned that I would want to take a commission for referring customers etc.

6. She (management) messages me back with this exact e-mail:

"Thanks a lot for getting back and the nice compliment. (I complimented their website and not her)

We are really interested in hearing more about your ideas and also understand that you have several questions before you can get started. That's why we think, a Skype call is the fastest and easiest way to talk about everything. Plus, this is a good way to get to know each other as well.

Do you have time to Skype this Friday, at four o'clock p.m. (your local time). Since you mentioned that you're located in the UK.
Please let me know if that works for you. Thanks a lot!
I look forward to hearing from you again.
Best regards,
Susan"

My question.

They want to hear "my ideas" on skype. I'm worried to tell them my ideas because I don't want them to nick them. I also have a few solid ideas on how to market their product, however, I haven't "polished" the details of how I will implement it - not because I don't know what to do, it's just that there are a few ways to do it (very similar but slightly different) and I'm still "deciding" on the best way of executing it. I am also coming up with different ideas every day of how to successfully market their product.

I have NEVER had any form of "business meeting" before, and I am s*****ing myself. I can't 100% articulate EXACTLY to them over skype how I'm going to market their product because I haven't decided on the finer details yet and also I don't want them to steal my ideas and go and do it themselves then cut me out of the equation.

What should I do?

Thanks guys

James

    Where are you based James?

Its fairly simple, and you have to at least have your first one (meeting) it just gets easier with practice.

You don't have to give your ideas away, and in fact they won't expect you to.

Put yourself in their shoes, they want to find out if you are genuine (after all they only had an email from you) and that your plans are legitimate and won't damage their reputation.

Treat the meeting as an exploration, you need information and they need information. They may not have an actual affiliate program that can track referred commission for instance, so they might want to find out from you how that normally works. But you don't need to provide them free consultancy on what actually you would do, just tell them about your successes in sending traffic, not your secrets.

I personally love these partnership building meetings, I'm jealous of you and want to join your call :)
