I've just spoken to Parcelforce and apparently, they have no idea what an EORI number or EORI certificate is. I normally use DHL, and they have my EORI number and handle all of that for me.

I'm not entirely sure who or where to go in Parcelforce to let them have this information, does anyone have any clue?

What are you trying to do?

I thought the EORI number was your VAT number?

I don't think anyone has ever asked me for it?

I'm not VAT registered, but I may be in the near future so I need the EORI certificate to prove it's been paid. Normally, DHL sort it out, I just pay them and at some point, my EORI certificate arrives in the post.

There is absolutely no reason why they wouldn't know what it is, sounds like you've just spoken to someone lacking knowledge or training. Ring them and ask for an email to send a link to the HMRC page for the Economic Operator Registration and Identification numbers. Seems odd the person you spoke to doesn't know what it is. I've provided one to all the couriers we use to import - DHL, Parcelforce, UPS, etc without issue.

your EORI is your import number. It is separate from your VAT number. I had to apply for one about 18months ago when i imported from china. it took a few weeks to arrive, it's all pretty straightforward. don't usually need one if you're getting stuff in via air though. strange that DHL didn't know what it was, must have been speaking to their Idiot Department?

No offence, but you should probably read the OP again.

DHL did know, it was Parcelforce that didn't. I've always had to use it for air imports, the certificate acts as proof that VAT was paid regardless of the method of transport.

An EORI number is a number, unique throughout the European Community, assigned by a customs authority in a Member State to economic operators (businesses) or persons. By registering for customs purposes in one Member State, an Economic Operator (EO) is able to obtain an EORI number which is valid throughout the Community. The EO will then use this number in all communications with any EC customs authorities where a customs identifier is required for example customs declarations.

All UK EORI numbers start with the letters GB. Most are followed by a twelve digit number based on the EO’s nine digit VAT number with a three digit suffix number at the end, for example GB123456789000. This meant that over 98 per cent of existing TURN holders including Pseudo TURNs were given an EORI number which was exactly the same as their previous TURN.

Most UK EORI numbers end 000. However some numbers relating to VAT Group Registrations, where each EO is a separate legal entity, will end in a three digit suffix other than 000.

The structure of the UK EORI number is the same for UK EOs who are not registered for VAT or EOs who are not established in the customs territory of the community.

Thanks. I know what an EORI number is - you should forward this to Parcelforce...
