Hey,

Do you tend to outsource SEO to freelancers via freelance websites like oDesk, Elance etc? Or do you tend to use a SEO agency.

If you do outsource to freelancers via freelance job websites, have you found the quality to be quite good?

The question only really applies if you outsource SEO at all :)

Although I know how to do SEO, I've outsourced a few tasks previously (before the recent Google updates) because i wanted to leverage my time.

The problem is this: SEO is getting more and more competitive and there's this risk: the ones you use to outsource your SEO might do things today that will rank your website on the short term but will also damage your rankings on the longterm, because Google is changing the rules pretty fast.

For example: I had a website that in April last year was getting 10,000 visitors/month. Do you know how many visitors I received last month? 800 because I got slammed 2-3 times by the updates.

So my answer to you is to use someone trustworthy, reliable with work ethics and not necessarily cheap!

I think that freelancers usually think on the short term so they want to show you results and they will do anything to achieve the goals fast.

The best approach is to think on the long term when it comes to SEO!

I think Nino11 is right, there's a lot of places that would do your SEO with the short term in mind, get you great results then give you 101 excuses when your ranking drops after an update.

If you are looking for a good SEO agency then you should try and get figures from them showing how the websites they have dealt with performed after any Google updates. Also, it's important to consider whether you want to outsource onshore or offshore.

There's a bunch of great SEO outsourcing companies in Britain (i.e. Bright Future) that provide the same (if better) service as an offshore company. As Nino11 said, the trouble with Freelancers is that while they think they'll only be around in the short term they'll only try and bring quick, unsustainable results.

Full agreement with everything said here. Transparency is key to success and depends on which aspect of SEO you're outsourcing. If it's the whole kaboodle then ask for case studies and reporting examples. A company that'll tell you what you want to hear will not get you the results due to the nature of the beast. Future proofing and internet marketing as a whole is swallowing up SEO as a standalone service.

If you're going to hire freelancers from sites like oDesk etc you gotta evaluate them before hand. Give them a test and see if they perform. These guys work better when given specific tasks not vague terms like build me some links. But for content they ain't bad.

If you have the budget hire someone or a small agency in the UK that has a good track record of improving a sites search visibility.

In my opinion it is all right to outsource SEO but the most important question is what to outsource. It is never wise to outsource the entire process. You should be knowledgable and well equipped enough to design the SEO campaign yourself and then outsource parts of it to freelancers like directory submission, blog commenting etc.
