please excuse this if it is a dumb question - I'm not in any way techie competent.

What I've heard is that in the ancient days, inbound links and outbound links were important for SEO / visibility. However, today, inbound are vital and outbound are hardly relevant at all.

I would like to know ..... is that truth or not?

much appreciated

Google is still a links driven search engine. Inbound links are vital for SEO purposes, the more competitive the market the more important.

Anchor text is important also, in that it provides Google with relevancy, so if your site is a plumbing business then a link with the text 'Belfast Plumber' provides Google with more relevancy than a straightforward link that has 'Joe Bloggs' in it.

Links are also important in that they drive traffic from other sites. Google isn't the only method of getting traffic.

If you have outbound links on your site make sure that you are linking to a credible site. You could check with a bad neighbourhood tool to see the credibility of a site you are linking to.

Outbound links may be a small factor in Google's algorithm, but with most business sites you are probably not going to link to other sites except from a resources page where you may wish to reciprocal link, particularly to show goodwill and build up a business relationship rather than to improve rankings dramatically.

Larger informational sites will by their nature naturally have outbound links.
