the extension in this instance makes no difference.
There was debate about .info domains being devbalued, but I have not wirtnessed that, and I have aover 100.info domains.
I've read the opposite personally, I've seen a test done where .infos came out as one of the top.

.org came out highest out of all the extensions I think.

EDIT: Found it, it was SEOMoz.

Which is best for seo if any .org or .co.uk if i bought gardener.org or gardener.co.uk? (i know its not available im just using as an example)

Ryan

If it's for a business, go .co.uk - regardless of the perpetual debate on "the perfect domain name for SEO", I always think it's best to stick to simple domains - .com or .co.uk - for memorability.

Some "end users" even struggle with the fact that there are more alternatives than .com at times..!

I would take the .co.uk but my competitor has it so i was just wondering if there is much difference either way? eg my competitor has (for example) gardenermanchester.co.uk and ranks really high despite the fact that he only has one page and its not that good of a page! Can i buy gardenermanchester.org and it still do as well?

.org is not the way to go.

Main reason is branding.
People don't associate .org with commercial businesses very much.
.co.uk is more professional, easy to remember etc as has been said.

GeoTargeting
.co.uk tells google its a uk business so it will show up in uk results better.
.org is global (hence .org.uk)

Domain Name
Domain names dont guarantee top spot for search terms (not in the slightest), but in areas of low competition they do have an affect.
Try variations such as manchester-gardener.co.uk gardenermanchester.co.uk mancuniangardener.co.uk manchestergardeningman.co.uk and so on and so on.

Competitors Rank
Whatever domain name you get, getting links to it will be what makes it rank (and on this matter there is loads to say). Thats probably what your competitor has done.

Dont get too hung up on this, theres loads to consider if you want to have a decent performing site.

But dont go .org =/

Will there be any SEO difference if i just created a local area page- mysite.co.uk/gardenermanchester than if i actually had a whole new site gardenermanchester.co.uk ?

Will either even rank any way or will it be over ridden by that areas competitors who are in that areas google places? as i can only really show a decent ranking in places for my own area

Thats a long winded questions.

Short answer, don't do it regardless.

Use a "Mysite" if :-
Your not planning to market online very much
Want to try it as a starter and move on later.

If you are planning to market online and serious about getting business that way, get your own domain name.

A subfolder "mysite.co.uk/businessname" is a page on someone elses site.

A subdomain "businessname.mysite.co.uk" is a subdomain under somone elses own domain.

neither of these you have any ownership over.

It's like getting your own business premises or working out of someone elses.

If you spend loads of time marketing where you are then move out of the temporary place its confusing and wasted marketing.

Get your own domain name (Your own Online Business Premises) and start marketing, planning to be there for some time.

My SEO Helpdesk

I would look at buying the domains gardnerinmanchester.co.uk and gardnersinmanchester.co.uk.

This would be a very easy term to optimise and you could do it yourself if you have a good understanding of SEO.

If you were looking to outsource the SEO, from experience of optimising this type of site, I would say it should take about 7 days before you were on page 1 of google for your keywords.

Hope that helps.

.co.uk will do well locally and a page on your site about gardening will do well in the search engines once
1) your title tags are clear and relevant to the keywords you are targetiing
2) the content on the age is relevant and keyword optimized
3) you have relevant backlinks to the page

No need to build a whole new site if you can do these three things.

Thanks for that Joe, but that test isn't what it is about, the test was not aimed at testing domain extensions, and the graph below simply shows peripheral data anbd an assumption.

E.G. had they carried out searches fro terms that had an educational bias, then .edu would have appeared in more numbers, so could you then assume that .edu's are given preference?

It is a good read for anyone who is into this sort of thing, but you have to be able to fully understand what the entire test is about, it is certainly not for beginners at all.

reality is that is no concrete proof that domains are given special preference beyond geo targeted domains. :0

I've read the opposite personally, I've seen a test done where .infos came out as one of the top.

.org came out highest out of all the extensions I think.

FROM SEO MOZ, to go with the picture.

Our interpretation and conclusions:
  • This data gives us more reason to believe Google's webspam chief, Matt Cutts, when he says .gov, .info and .edu are not special cased and don't receive special bonuses or penalties to rankings
  • The .org TLD extension is surprising - do these sites earn more links? Do they have less spam? Perhaps they tend to be less commercial and have an easier time garnering references? In any case, we're happy to be SEOmoz.org!
  • Don't forget about the exact match data from above - .com is still probably a very good thing (at least own it if you're using a different extension)
P.S with regards to point 2, dont all rush out and buy .org domains =/
