'Opportunist retailing'

Is there any mileage in this idea anymore?

The whole view now seems to be that everyone must know what they want to retail, who their target audience are & what their USPs are blah...blah...

Would simply scouring local cash'n'carrys or the net and just retail what you think you can get a decent markup on work thesedays? or are you expected to know the ins and outs of what you're selling?

there is a shop that changes what is sells month on month

i think there is one in cheltenham but there isn't in Cardiff so dont know about the business

what there is a gap for now is seasonal business shops, with the amount of high streets with empty stores im sure you could get a 3 month contract, im not talking christmas lights and decs here im talking full on decent christmas gifts, people spend for the sake of it at christmas with markups silly high and everything being sold at full price untill last miniute

missed the boat this year but its something well worth looking into

The Christmas shop idea is actually something I'm onto and will be holding this year (although slightly scaled down...)

On another note, it's funny how I got a reply 5 minutes after this post was posted on twitter!

i lived in the states for a while and for most of september and the month of october, lots of empty units were hired out and became "halloween" shops

a few months later they'd be christmas shops and then they'd do valentines and easter

same guys running them, i wasn't there to see what they did for the summer months, i'm guessing 4th july stuff

but seems there is an opportunity for seasonal shopping

however, i tend to avoid these shops as it's all just tat - they are usually a bombsite, stuff is cack and i've no time to wrestle with the schemie punters inside them!! (i'm such a snob!!! LOL)

thats one is the issue with the few that do do it at the moment

if one could access volumes of decent stock you could be laughing

Trouble is loads of other people will be doing the same, so lots of shops will be selling similar items. You're better to source your own stock from sources not widely known so that you get a head start.
