opinions on hosting companies

Hi there

sorry I am new to the sight so I can't link to anything yet . However I was just wondering what peoples opinions where on the best web hosting firms are to point your domain names at

any input would be most welcome

Hey Boyd, I always found the guys at 34sp to do a very well priced hosting package, and have found there support excellent whenever I've needed it.

I am using godaddy, hostgator and hostpapa and the three can be really slow if you take a shared server...

i'll add vidahosts as well. I will say though that if anyone comes across a host called Yourhost, run for the hills, they used to be called web-mania and did a number on lots of customers, myself included. It nearly got to the point where i physically went to their offices and asked the owner a few choice questions but luckily I escaped them when I did.

but like i said, Vidahost have been spot on with me

Been using Vidahost and had no probs. Also got a site with tmdhosting and they've been spot on as well.

Strangely enough I changed from web-mania to vidahost, and am very happy with the change.
Never had major problems with web-mania, other than the incessant emails prior to renewing registration or hosting, but I that was before the changeover to yourhost.
I would be interested to know what problems you had, just to make myself feel better.

the servers started crashing loads, no customer support, no one answering the phones, no replies to emails etc, i thought I lost my whole site at one point

some people paid to renew their domain names and the money wasn't passed to whoever and peoples sites were left offline. disgusting firm mate, makes me mad just thinking about that prat that runs it

I have just Googled and found they went bust, seems I got out just in time.
I did have to use Nominet to change registration, because of no response, it all makes sense now.

Its a joke that this cowboy can ever run a business again. it shows the mark of the man when he finally replied to an email after I threatened legal action and politelty said I'll ring in 5 minutes so answer the phone or heres my number, ring me, he totally bottled it and wouldnt even speak to me to explain what was happening. Im getting wound up by him again now lol

Agreed. No company is perfect but these guys tick most of the boxes.

I like asking what's the best colour for a plant

Linux (php/mysql) or Windows (asp/ms-sql) ?
Shared-hosting or Dedicated ?
What level of availability is acceptable ?
UK or overseas ?
24/7 support or only afterschool ?

If you can define your requirements, you might get sensible offers. Otherwise you get affiliates and zealots recommending hosts that might not come close to match your needs.
