Online Problems with Visa

Helping a son to make a lump sum payment to his mortgage account with NatWest on Sunday. Went through all the process to pay £2000. At the time to process the payment, Visa declined the transaction. Tried again and the same result. Rang the bank and they said they could see the transaction request and had authorised Visa to allow the transaction and to give it 10 minutes before doing it again. 20 minutes later still declined by Visa. Rang the bank again and same answer from them. Left it one hour and still declined. So gave up and tried again on Monday Still the same, Rang the bank and this time was told that they could not affect how Visa worked but to try £1000 instead. Still no joy but eventually managed to get 4 X £500 transactions to go through. What a performance with Visa.

Anything over £1000 and you're better off doing a bank transfer. In my, somewhat limited, experience it tends to be 50/50 with a card.

by the looks of it Visa were not happy with any money being sent over £1000. I wonder if you could have sent £999

Maybe Visa are skint, seriously, they aren't obliged to do it.

Paypal have the ar*e with me at the moment, cant buy nothing for toffee.

Was the payment taken over the phone or online? If online did it go through the Verified by Visa authentication process?

Yes online and yes Verified by Visa which is where the problem occurred. We had to pay 500 4 times as Visa would not accept 2000 or even 1000 as one transaction.

That's odd as 3D Secure authentication is not only there to protect the customer and merchant but also to authorise higher value transactions. It sounds like they might have been having problems with the VbV connector server responses.
