Does anyone know which software drives or is at the heart of freelance online platforms or marketplace?

These are usually complex systems so it's likely they are custom-built. I am not aware of any off-the-shelf package but some of the devs on here will be able to shed some light on it.

Most of the big ones are bespoke custom platforms, you could build this with anything from WordPress upwards though.

The big one's are custom, as are most big sites. Its probably worth looking at what stack they do use: it might be completely from scratch, they might use a framework or libraries.

You might find something off the shelf, or that is near enough to be adapted to your needs. I do not know of one though.

You could, but Wordpress is a terrible platform for something that is going to be mostly custom code - its a customisable CMS, you should be using a web framework.

Unless there is already a plugin that does what you want.

Are you talking about Fiverr sites or ones like Ework/PPH?

There is an abundance of 'gig themes' for Wordpress but the ones whereby money is held in Escrow, jobs are posted and slightly bespoke angle to it; may need adapting or creating from scratch.
