Online Directories

Does anyone have any recomendations on good online directories to register with and if you have had any work/leads through them?

Hi WW,
Yell.com has been superb for me, although I'm not certain if you have to be listed in the Yellow Pages before being allowed to register in the directory.

There's heaps of other I'm regd. with and despite providing links back to their site, I've received no calls. Recently regd. with Thompsons, who promised 'the world' but so far it seems to be hidden behind an eclipse!

lol, we made the mistake of using thompsons adwords, we haven't even had one visitor click the adword link. really wouldn't use them again.

I joined webbit but my logo wont upload and there is no catogory for art/artists so I havn't done anything with it.

A lot of these directories are unproven and overrated as they are just a long list of websites and whilst they may offer exposure as a whole - the chance of this converting to real valuable traffic is tiny is comparison to any other pre-qualifed traffic.

Yes I know that we are able to submit listings to various categories and we can pay for premium positions - but how many people are actually coming to the directory in question to view your particuar category? At best if you do decide to sign-up with yell.com or thomson - ensure you give your listing a unique identifer so you can measure the success (or not!) of the traffic this generates - if any!

Women Want is a third party directory which also now offers Grid Space for potential advertisers at a cost of £0.27 per day of which 50% of this cost goes to breast cancer charities. It's a great way for advertisers to reach a specific demographic as opposed to a normal directiry advertising. You can see it at:

thanks dave i had a look at the geocities one - there are thousands listed - is there anywhere/anyway of separating the great and the good from the rubbish? -or is it trial and error?

I'm upto 'B' on geocities and that took some days... though you will find us under 'W'

A bit of guess work but if you have the google toolbar it will show you what ranking it has before you submit.


PS also you could ask Brain at Platinax. He knows everything about this!
