Has anyone tried OpenOffice here? It works the same as Microsoft office but it's free opensource and you never have to pay for anything. It also has its excel type as one of its features. Pretty much all functions are similar to Microsoft office. Just a thought though if you are looking for a free one as I've used it before as an alternative to MS office suite.

Yes, I use OpenOffice all the time. Or LibreOffice which is similar (it's a fork of OpenOffice) but possibly better now.

spreadsheet doesn't have the functionality I get from Excel.

I keep hearing this,it would be great to know exactly what functionality it falls short on. I'm only a 'moderate' spreadsheet user (sums, the odd extra sheet with vlookup, string concatenation etc) so haven't found a limitation, but genuinely interested where people find the limitations.

It's been a while since I last used Libre Office so I downloaded the latest version this evening. The issue I had in the past was that it failed to keep the colour highlighting that I put into cells. I tried a test just now and this still seems to be the case. It also used to change the font but that didn't happen this time.

My opinion is that you are better sticking to one or the other.
