Most free guides (including moz) are worth what you pay for them... Most are, at best, misleading.can anyone recommend a free quide to off-site SEO?
Understand that any offsite work is strictly against G guidelines (thou must not attempt to manipulate the SERPs) and you can expect to crash and burn at some point. It therefore makes sense to buy some throwaway domains and practice on them.I am a beginner to this and would like to do some of the work myself in evening etc rather than pay an SEO guy to do everything
Start off small and develop yourself from there. I know from experience that if you work on everything at once it can be detrimental not only to your efforts but it will also be demoralising once you don't see the results you were expecting.
Another benefit of starting off slow on developing your new website off-site is that you will be safe in Google's eyes. If, for instance, you built 10 backlinks each day for a month then Google will start to get suspicious and may penalize you for using black hat methods. In their eyes you could be using an automated tool. The general rule is 2-3 backlinks a day.
I've written an article on hubpages specifically on building blog comment backlinks but I'nm not llowed to post the url here. If you'd like to read it then message me and I'll provide the url.

Any chance you can give me 3 things to do that will improve my ranking, not something flakey like optomise your keywords but something solid like, optimise your keywords because of this by doing this and this will be the result.
