can anyone recommend a free quide to off-site SEO?
Most free guides (including moz) are worth what you pay for them... Most are, at best, misleading.
I am a beginner to this and would like to do some of the work myself in evening etc rather than pay an SEO guy to do everything
Understand that any offsite work is strictly against G guidelines (thou must not attempt to manipulate the SERPs) and you can expect to crash and burn at some point. It therefore makes sense to buy some throwaway domains and practice on them.

If your main income depends on this, you'd be a wee bit foolish to endanger your main money site.

As for the advice from the spammers, most is well out of date and likely, at best, to have no effect.

In everything you need to be selective. Focus on putting your message were your potential customers might be found rather than link value. At least if you crash and burn, you'll still get some traffic.

Have you checked out the Google Webmaster Guidelines? That's probably your best bet for an effective off-page SEO guide as it lets you know exactly what Google is after. Okay, they seem to change their mind like a runway model changes clothes, but at least you will be getting all your information from the horse's mouth!

Off Page Optimization is the activity that is done on other sites for our site to increase search engine ranking. Off Page Optimization activities include directory submission, article submission, forum discussion, blog posting, press release, blog commenting, white paper submission and along with this social bookmarking (in digg, delicious, reddit, stumbleupon) and social media promotion (in facebook, twitter, linkedin). Off page optimization creates strong back links for our site which not only helps for search engine ranking but also for drive traffic from sites where we have done all these submissions..

Start off small and develop yourself from there. I know from experience that if you work on everything at once it can be detrimental not only to your efforts but it will also be demoralising once you don't see the results you were expecting.

Another benefit of starting off slow on developing your new website off-site is that you will be safe in Google's eyes. If, for instance, you built 10 backlinks each day for a month then Google will start to get suspicious and may penalize you for using black hat methods. In their eyes you could be using an automated tool. The general rule is 2-3 backlinks a day.

I've written an article on hubpages specifically on building blog comment backlinks but I'nm not llowed to post the url here. If you'd like to read it then message me and I'll provide the url.

Where did you pluck this general rule 2-3 backlinks per day from???

I don't think these off-page techniques work now. I also did all like article, SBM, directories, blog-comments......... but no use. Right now i am focusing to use Facebook & Twitter. I do write more quality & informative content for my site and then share it on sharing sites.

Hi Jack

If you're thinking that link work needs to be done to help your site rank well then I'd suggest you also look for advice on content seo techniques ie; working through the pages of your website and using some sensible strategies within the wording of your pages to help Google understand better, not only what your site is about but also the keyword terms you'd want to target. These days you do have to be particularly cautious on how you do external link work but work on your pages now by reading up on content seo, get an understanding on how you can easily manipulate the words on your pages, apply that knowledge and then see whether you still need links. Looking at your site and your potential keywords I'd say what you're wanting to achieve could most probably be done without links.

Only my two cents.

As the previous contributors have pointed out, off-page SEO starts with researching competitor backlinks.

When you find out the most profitable backlink sources that work well for your competition, then you'll have a perfect starting point for planning your own strategy.

To check backlinks to any site, you can use the new backlink index in WebMeUp (it is completely free while in beta).

And here's a piece of helpful info about compliance of backlinks with Google policies.

its really better to break startegies of seo into parts do not concentrate on one part only...place links with every offsite seo technique in equal proportion, target also the links which relate to your domain and competitors link.At the last do not forget the impact of social media as its too helpful for gaining real traffic towards site

Agreed with above posts, look at competition, then consider what needs to be done for offsite SEO - add your website to free directories, do you have time to write blogs for your own site, or guest post on another site, then do keyword rich articles but ones that aren't spammy and don't just have keywords placed randomly throughout. It needs to be relevant and make sense. Use social media as well, get them to engage with you, Google appreciates this and rewards with high rank!

A lot of companies will facilitate you if you let them know exactly what you wish them to do and what you wanna do, probably make life a lot easier for them. I know we would work with you this way. Depending on what you wish to do yourself.

For a new site i'd get all your social stuff in place first to get that initial 'buzz' going, not matter what line your in you should have facebook and twitter pages, pinterest and sharing buttons on site as well as youtube videos created for inclusion into web 2.0 properties and blogs for a starting point.

There is a slowly slowly approach to be used for a new site with low traffic to start but putting everything in place for long term blogs and posts will set you in good stead.

Scanning this

SEO just seems dodgy

Beware of this, you risk this or that, do not do this, spam etc

It just sounds very shifty to me..

What things can easily be done to improve rankings?

1. THING 1
2. THING 2

It seems to be all very vague

Any chance you can give me 3 things to do that will improve my ranking, not something flakey like optomise your keywords but something solid like, optimise your keywords because of this by doing this and this will be the result.

NO FLAKEY RESPONSES!

SEO ... on the fence

I just threw up an article about an event for the TIGER WOODS foundation a charitable golf thing, this information is available only on the TW foundation site, one other site and mine, no one else is allowed to publish it, is this going to help ? it is connected to me in that they are doing the same event (Nearest the pin golf event) as I am, of course I hope it helps in the rankings.. but have yet to communicate wiht an SEO person who can come close to quantifying what specific actions should produce

Your asking someone (an SEO) to make you a promise that they might not be able to keep...to tell you that a particular action is going to have an exact re-action. It isn't possible for any SEO to tell you that action A will always produce result B. There are too many metrics involved, too many variables, and too many factors.

Your saying you don't want a flakey answer, but your asking someone to snap a digestive biscuit in two whilst telling you where the crumbs are going to land.

It sounds like your focusing too much one single factors and expecting single outcomes for each.... read the Google guidelines.... there are thousands of factors you need to take into account for your single goal (higher rankings).

Off page optimization is the technique in which ranking factors are not present in your website but it’s a very important part of SEO. There are many techniques like Article submission, Blog posting, Guest blogging and Business listing very helpful to improve your website ranking in SERP.
