after reading all replies I wanted to comment on this I have been running myown online business since 2011 and I have been doing a lot research and been monitoring what my competitors doing ( who is making over 300m turn over a year) so far what I found out
1- submit to paid directories and free ones pr5 and over
2- publishing articles on related blog or review sites who has pr4 and over
3- they are also getting many many links from forums
4-creat a blog under subdomain and post around 2 unique blogs weekly
5-social media (pinterest, twitter,facebook,g+)
6- try to give free small gifts away (I.e like us on fb and win ......)
7-link wheel
8- email marketing,
9- if you are selling products use ebay, groupon etc...

Don't forget more click you get means you get more visitor and your name will be in peoples mind all the time and google will see yoursite worth crawling very often also you must use google webmaster tool
