If an employee gives a weeks notice, then an hour before due to start their next shift rings in sick what action can the employer take?
The employees contract requires a 2 hour notice period if they are not attending?

Haha Jeff, I was wondering the same thing. Maybe there's a case of "serial employment issues" at the pub.

If an employee is absent because of sickness during their notice period they are entitled to be paid as if they worked their normal hours during that period.
Except when the contract of employment states that the notice period required to be given by the employer is at least a week more than statutory notice.

Which was clarified by their own HR dept, but thanks for responses

I don't think that's necessarily true and SSP doesn't kick it until day 4

It isn't an SSP issue.
1st sentence is the effect of section 88 of the Employment rights Act 1996.
2nd sentence relates to 87(4) of the same Act.
