Not sure if i was right here

I repaired a laptop belonging to a local shop owner. Took me much of last night to remove the spam and malware.
I promise it back in a few days, i returned it to him today. He took it off me and asked me to coming back later tonight for the money while he could check to see it was ok.

Must admit i did not feel comfortable with that as
a) he could re infect the laptop and blame me for it.
b) invent some reason not to pay

Then i suppose from another angle
a) despite not knowing me from adam (i do shop there on a regular basis) trust could be an issue.

I suppose have to wait to see how this plays out. If its just a case of pop down, heres your cash, no problem. But otherwise. What to do...

I would never do that. You did your job and therefore should be paid. If there is a problem still after the customer has gone away then they have that right to come back to you and request a refund or get you to look at it again but never let a customer (that has come to an expert at what they do lets not forget) go away to check your work before paying.

No dosh, no laptop back. It won't take long before some people abuse your trust and you'll end up in the position you describe in a) and b).

If you haven't got a policy in place that discusses refunds, warranties, returns etc then get one made up. That way, they pay upon collection and receive a copy of the policy if there are any further issues.

ZigoJacko i have that nasty feeling in my water that says your right. I was doing this more as a favour than anything. Lets see what happens.
I dont think the police would be interested, but after i notify the neighbours etc and boycott the shop (well we will). See what happens.
Most of my repair jobs are posted after the customer has paid so never normally been an issue.
I suppose the thing is to see how it plays.

Er, yes this was his problem @DazRave he was running the shop. So could not get away. Like i say i do not feel right about it, but lets see what happens (it wasn't the smartest move i've made). I will post the outcome though

Oh well, in that case, if it was one of those "i'm rushed off my feet at the moment, leave it there and i'll have a look at it later on" then it could all still be quite innocent really.

Lesson learnt for the future though i guess.

@RazRave i spend a lot of money in his shop, not just on groceries but on advertising my business in his shop window. Plus i think a relative needs the same service. See what happens. If he was miles away or a total stranger, then certainly not. But he knows i tend to pop in later for a few bits. I'll let you know how it unfolds :)

What's the issue here? It's business to business, get used to it. Invoice him properly and expect him to pay within your time set out on the invoice. If he doesn't pay within that time frame pay him a visit and or remind him in an email.

Just my point chap, what is the issue, services were rendered, he paid. Transaction complete.
I consider the thread closed now to be honest:)
