Not even page 64?

    Why is it my website not in google at all?

    Since november i have had my website and for 'fancy dress' or 'clothing' it doesnt list it at all? Why not?

    I wouldnt mind if it was on page 64 at least id be on there and could work it up?

    How long will it take to get listed even on page 64?

    I just looked :(

    It will be the fact you have virtually no content on you site, no words that google can rank you for its mainly just pictures.

    Im sure when the site review regulars are on they will give you a review where you posted and they will point it all out for you.

    I'm not an seo guru but I'd say you have several obvious problems: no text on your site, no google food, your title is "clothing chain" and as such only works for that phrase, your description aint great either, etc...

    Search "clothing chain" on google and I bet you come up in first place ;) It's in your title and your domain name!

    Apart from the lack of content and your selection of names for your catergories I would say that your "Keywords" are very broad and you are expecting to come high in an industry that is cut throat

    If you have no idea of SEO there is no chance you will get a site to the top using keywords like clothing.
    You have to think how many clothes shops in the uk are fighting for the first couple of pages. And paying a lot of money in the process.

    Your website has almost no 'text' content that google can refer to for keywords people would search for. If you click on the jeans page and look at the source code (ctrl+u in firefox or page>view source in IE) there is very little reference to jeans, the types you're selling the quality of the product etc. You may think that putting all this advice and information is pointless for the consumer but it's essential for search engines. Bascially the more references to clothes, jeans, shop, selling, trousers and dresses the higher score you will receive from google for those keywords. At the moment the only reference on the jeans page is what it sees in the link code. Your product info is very poor too. Include make, sizes, style colours etc in the info so when I google size 12 blue jeans it's more likely to reference that exact page.

    Hi Gemma

    as others have said, you need to up your content and really concentrate on getting the keywords in there. For example, your homepage title does not say "fancy dress", it simply says "Clothing Chain". this will go against you in the rankings, so ensure those keywords are in there.

    What keywords could i try to go for that have not as many people searching for them then? I am currently building backlinks/content/articles and a blog on my site so i am working on the SEO part, not sure what you mean about shop nam, will have a look at that!

    Gemma - take a pragmatic and user-centric approach. For example, do you think your users need a caption by the images? Would more descriptive text offer added value? Personally I think this cannot harm, so would go for it.

    Secondly, your hompage is a little bare. I would spice this up by adding in a "latest news" box or possibly some unique copy about your business. Write as much useful information aimed at users as possible. Consider your users as top priority, search engines second, and the rankings will come.

    But really if people are shopping for clothes, do they really want lots of text? I see not loads of text on amazon.co.uk or argos.co.uk? so how do these rank. I know people type the name for them and big advertising budgets etc but they have no text...

    You have a point there, i just googled "black dresses" and found this site on page one,

    http://www.oasis-stores.com/dresses/dept/fcp-category/categorylist

    They have no links coming in , and they rank above an exact match url http://www.blackdresses.org.uk/ with lots more text

    Im not familiar with seo for clothes, but i would think that the higher ranking sites are there because of age and have sites with many pages,

    You're not alone, there's many thousands that won't ever be found in the major search engines. This is due to zero on-site SEO, or very bad SEO.

    You need content and I'd add some text to your homepage saying what your service is about, then add some related keywords (be careful not to spam them 50 times), and you'll get picked up for them.

    Obviously, some keywords you'll never rank for eg: Clothing - as these are owned by the huge clothing companies with cash to burn on SEO.


    • Get an on-site blog and post a few times a week
    • Add some text to your homepage eg:
      We are ClothingChain and we specialise in XYZ style of clothing. We supply 123 types of jackets etc etc

    • Get a Press Release onto press release websites and contact the press with a story (this will also get you exposure onto local press websites)
    • Exchange more links (at least 2000)
    • Add a 'Recommend Us' tool to your site
    • Add Social Bookmark links to your site
    • Get some directory links
    • Create a Resource List for your industry - others will link to it
    • Put some videos on Youtube - be creative, then add the Youtube page to your blog/add videos to your site.
    • Submit to quality/authority websites, even if their paid for inclusion
    • Get a link from your Chamber of Commerce (you will have to join as a member)
    • Give something for free - people will recommend you.

    because it's all about quality which over time builds authority. consider those two terms:

    quality - whether it be a useful description or user review, a unique photograph or even a special offer, there is a reason why this is quality content and it's a reason why people will talk about you on forums, social bookmark you or link to you in some way. this builds.

    authority! authority is what makes you rank. if google cites you as an authoratitive source, you're laughing.

    Thanks very much event domain.

    I sent a press release to my local newspaper a couple of weeks ago and the full page was in friday and that was the first one i ever sent.

    I dont think ive got anything newsworthy to send though? Im not good at creating stories

    there is not much point in getting 2000 links if they are not relevant and of no real value...

    I know what you are saying about not having loads of text on your homepage, but place the text under the images at the bottom of the page or add a 'div' layer...this will allow you to have keyword rich (not spammy) content and then allow for internal linking...

    What is meant by these phrases? Im trying to learn SEO, slowly but surely.

    I think it would be easier to rank for fancy dress than clothing.

    sorry - a div layer allows you to 'hide' your content on the homepage, so the only way you see it - is by clicking on a link to expand the page

    internal link - will link your content on your homepage to various pages throughout your site

    and yes you should target individual types of clothing rather than 'clothing' generically - a bit more easier if you are doing the work yourself

    And then you say you are having trouble getting anywhere on google.
    I know there is a debate on the search engines use of meta data but the site doesnt make sense, do you sell fancy dress clothing or fashion clothing.

    Your in a massive market and without doing any research I would of thought that a high population of women already have the name of the store they are going to write in google ie

    Oasis Dress
    Top Shop Skirt
    Primark Bag

    This is either from personal choice or getting the urge to search from the likes of GMTV/Lorraine This Morning and all the magazines.

    If you want to use keywords like "clothing" and you are planning on doing the SEO yourself, then I think you will be wasting your time.
    You dont go to the Reliant Robin garage and ask them to build a Ferrari
    You really need to employ an expert/s in this field.

    All the "Coming Soon" pages are not helping either

    Yes there is no e-mail address as far as I can see.

    I know Scottish Enterprise run some nice FREE seminars on Search Engine Optimisation, they don't turn you into an expert but would at least give you some idea of the scale of the task ahead of you.

    Perhaps you could contact the equivalent body in your area and see what they have on offer?

    So lots more words needed? Any words with keywords littered in the text?

    I think you have 2 main issues:

    1. The first and the main issue is that you are trying to compete in a saturated market. For more information on what I mean by saturated, have a read of this what's saturated post - I would definitely class fancy dress as a saturated market, with its easy availability of dropshippers, and as such the sheer numbers of people setting up websites using such a service

    2. Another issue you might have is one of the google sandbox, which makes it difficult for recent websites to rank for competitive and popular terms. Have a read of this recent thread for more information on the google sandbox, and believe me fancy dress is a very competitive term, mainly due to the first issue I raised.

    So even if you do most things right SEO-wise, you still might struggle in the first 10 months or so because of issue 2. (Getting 2000 links might not be classed as "doing things right", depending on how those links are gained.) But even once you are over the google sandbox issue, issue 1 is not going to go away and it will still mean that it will be difficult, and expensive, to compete in such a saturated market.

    As per the majority of comments, you definitely need more content on your site. I'm worried though that you are trying to do too many things. Personally, I wouldn't buy clothes from an independent site that also did fancy dress. Your product range also makes SEO far more difficult as you are trying to get ranked for such a broad range of terms.
    If I was you, I would create one site for the fancy dress items, and another for the general clothes.
    You also need to target much more specific and long-tail keywords. Even fancy dress is going to be really difficult to get anywhere for when your domain is not even a year old. Go after specific searches - while the volume will not be as great, you will get better results on the search engines and conversions are sometimes better. Use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool for ideas on keywords - it will give you search volume and competition and is a great place to start.

    fancy dress 11100000
    fancy costume dress 673000
    party costumes 368000
    nurse costume 165000

    As you become more granular and long tail the traffic becomes more targeted and also with the long tail in this case (Fancy dress) the user is much further down the buying cycle for nurses costume than fancy dress. Try all of the geo appendages aswell like party costumes in sussex..in brighton sussex...in brighton east sussex etc
