Nop Commerce

Hi, I am a newbie! I am getting all carried away posting! hope I don't get told off!

I use an e-commerce platform called Nop Commerce. Is anyone else using this software to run their online shop? I would be really interested

thank you

well you understand more than I do. I think I am an expert user of NopCommerce, but know nothing of the back end or FTP or anything.........:|

I lost my web designer and it seems he didn't pick the best e-commerce product, as no one else uses it!!!!! so I can't find anyone to help me with it.

It was free though. :D

TBH I know how to look at it and tell you what it does and how, but i am not a developer and certainly not an expert is nopcommerce, however it is coded very well, and easy to understand and build on, the nopcommerce has good support and kept up to date.

You would be better looking for developers who use asp.net, most of the developers on here a php developers.

So you do have a good product, however I don't know how you would find a new developer, although if you put something in the tenders forum you might strike lucky.

Thanks for the tip, I will try that forum. Trouble is my web designer also got me on hosting on GoDaddy and it is rubbish!!!! and doesn't support versions of Nopcommerce over 1.9 - I think the are on 3.0 now grrrrrrrrrrrr but I can't upgrade (not that I would know how to anyho!) :p

it will depend on services you have with godaddy, but IMo their shared hosting although reliable, the rest of it is rubbish.

Vidahost will easily run nopcommerce, although you will need a VPS at the minimum becuase their cloud doesn't support asp.net 4.5

Make sure you ask for asp.net developers there are a few, but otherwise ppl will try and sell you php, although some might be able to change you over if you prefer.

Just had a thought, if you contact http://www.swoo.co.uk/, he is an asp.net developer and a member of this forum so might be able to help.

NopCommerce IS very widely used. Its ASP.net which is an excellent platform, but some perceive as being expensive compared to all the free stuff out there.

We're actually the main direct competitor to NopCommerce in terms of free open source asp.net ecommerce software, in a firm second place behind them! (see my signature for link) I won't knock their system though - I've not too much experience of it, but its highly regarded.

Nop switched to MVC after version 1.9 which is a different approach to programming. We've been creating a migration path from v1.9 of NopCommerce to our software for those who don't wish to move to MVC, so that might be an option for you if you have problems getting the Nop upgrade done.

Hi

We use nopcommerce and have done since version 1.4, now upgraded to 2.8

its a good piece of kit though at times infuriating at the way they do certain things.

Have it all working now though struggled to find a decent asp.net 4.5 host.

The advise is right, they are now working using the MVC framework and asp.net 4.5 i think you would struggle to update the version you have.

would be best maybe to try and export data and re-import into the new version of the cart (depends on how much data you have etc)

thats what i have just done from 1.4 to 2.8

I've had a quick look and logged in to the online demo of nopCommerce - actually it looks quite good!

You may find that developers for it are harder to find and more expensive than equivalent PHP developers but you could check out their partner page:
    http://www.nopcommerce.com/solutionpartners.aspx

Alternatively you could look at moving to a PHP platform like OpenCart. But if what you've got is working well for you then there's probably no need as long as you can get the support for it that you need.

have to admit luckily i am a experienced web developer (now running my own company full time) so i have made some changes myself but nothing overly exciting.

I think most older nopcommerce sites could benefit from some of the features in the new nopcommerce.

ie : cookie policy, better cart functionality, new templates, full text search etc.

I really would recommend upgrading if you can.

It is always better to use a popular open source system and then if your web dev goes walkies which seems to happen too often you can get someone else to maintain it. Using bespoke systems or obscure systems ties you into to one web developer and often high fees.

Depending on your requirements use could use Wordpress, Drupal or Magento. Hope that helps, feel free to PM me if you need to know more.

    :)

Asp.net and nop commerce are hardly obscure. Nopcommerce IS open source, as are several of the major asp.net carts. If you're into PHP you might not have heard of them, but there's a massive number of asp.net developers out there especially for higher end development. We moved our own site to .net as the PHP carts we had couldn't cope without expensive hosting resources... .net is compiled and combined with ms SQL stored procedures makes it very efficient with its use of hosting horsepower.

I think my store looks pretty good. I am not allowed to post links (and that is not why I joined this forum) but it is called pawsplaza.co.uk if you wanted to have a look at what I have done with NopCommerce. I would really like to find a web desiner/progammer who could help me tweak it.
The nopcommerce forum is quite good, but they get impatient with me asking dumb questions. :p (personally I think there is no such thing)
But a girls gotta learn!

We are both PHP, JAVA and .NET eCommerce consultants and have provided a number of nopCommerce ecommerce solutions in the past (including migrations from nopCommerce).

The good. Extendable, scalable and "secure" (there have been issues). With tools for, storefront management, customers, wish lists, coupons, tax support, multi payment gateway and multi-lingual support. For example, we were able to quickly set up tax categories based on shipping addresses, and batch upload products using Excel.

The bad. One word, performance. We were forced to implement a number of tweaks to overcome some performance issues.

Overall a good offering, but there are others out there with stronger community support. Would we recommend to a client? Probably not. Only if the client already had considerable investment in the platform.

If you need any further advice, then feel free to give me a shout. Happy to help!
