I have a new website for a business however i appear to have done something in setting up the website to have upset Google as i don't think that i am even in the top 100 for any of the search terms that i think are relevant.

I have set up an Adwords campaign which is bringing in some results however i am nowhere in the generic searches, and when i say nowhere i mean absolutely nowhere. Even three year old newspaper articles are ranking on page one and i can't even get close!

How long should one expect to wait to have to hit the Top 100?

A new site could be on page 1 in a couple of days if you do it right and the competition isn't too fierce.

PM me the site details and I'll take a look of you like.

fisicx is right, if your site settings are correct and your competition isnt too crazy, it shouldnt be too hard to rank. Although, you will need to create at least a few backlinks to your site most likely from some-what related sites in order for Google to show you some love.

You can check the search query report in Google webmaster tools. Sitemap also will tell you whether your pages are indexed or not. If it shows indexed then you have to work hard to crack in ranking. Either you have to rewrite your content or build some quality links.

New domain names can take a little longer to squeeze into the top pages, although as mentioned above if the competition is low to moderate ranking should be OK. Have you checked that your website content is optimized for the search terms you want? Beyond onpage, you can start creating some niche related backlinks.
