No communication from HMRC?

I have yet to recieve any communication from HMRC regarding my tax return, but I was told by a friend that I would have recieved it by now?

I started trading on March the 5th this year, which meant I was trading for just under a month in 2010/2011. Prior to this time I worked for a company as a PAYE employee.

I have recieved a 'bill' for my NIC (which I have made arrangements to pay next week in full), no problems there.

Its just confused me alittle in terms of not being requested to file my earnings. Will I have to declare it next year instead because it was such a short period of time? Should I call them and ask them whats going on?

I dont have an accountant that I can ask at the moment but will be looking towards getting one of the online £30 a month services.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Have you received confirmation of your UTR? And are you reg online for Self Assessment? This is the easier way to file your return and will give you the answers you need.

If no to either of the above then yes, I would call them asap to clarify your position. You need to file before 31/1/12 or else penalties will be levied.

I may have done but its possible that it was discarded (old cleaner was terrible for throwing anything laying around).

I gave HMRC a call immediately after reading your post and I'll be able to file my return within a fortnight.

Thanks for your help.
