Nice Weather = Less Traffic?

I've noticed our site has been quieter than normal the last couple of days. I'm thinking this is because of the nice weather so more people are outside as opposed to sitting at their computer.

Does anyone else find this?

Yep, definitely. If you look at year on year comparisons, you'll notice some serious peaks and valleys.

Although many businesses have unique sales cycles (like continuing professional education courses selling better right before end of year or electronics gifts selling before christmas and graduation), there are definitely some downturns in web traffic during peak lovely weather, just as bricks and mortar shops will find downturns during horrible rain and snow.

Id agree that it can affect it. When its sunny i myself am outside enjoying the weather and giving my computer a break. I even wait to do my food shop which is urgent of an evening when the sun sets :)

Seasonal peaks and drops throughout the year will happen

Weather will effect a business - especially the pub trade! In a past life, I remember someone from Bulmers saying that they spent a fortune on weather forecasts becuase as soon as the temperature went above 20 degrees, cider sales trebled! The effect at present is likely to be more pronnounced becuase April was so gloomy.

As well as weather you need to be aware of the effect of holdiays. We have just analysed over 3 million phone calls from advertising over the Easter and Royal wedding period last year and forecast that the Jubilee celebrations will lead to a reduction in enquires of over 20% compared to a normal week.

Furthermore following the holiday period, you can expect an increase in enquires compared to normal of aboyut 20%.

If you want a copy of this reasearch let me know.

Hi folks

This phenomenon has a direct impact on our business (affiliate network). Visits decline in summer in most of the online shops. What to do? Be prepared and develop a counter strategy:
- sales
- special offers
- seasonal incentives

To the last question: We have publishers, using mobile ads, but they experience the same as all the others...less traffic.

So never cuss when it's raining ;)

Hi folks

The weather has definitely an impact on business in different sectors. I work for a big affiliate network, Partner-ads, and every summer the sales decrease not only in one category. This influences our business directly as well. For the benefit of the merchants and our own, we recommend that our merchants get in touch with us so we can define a "counter strategy".
Typically:
- sales
- seasonal promotion campaigns (new marketing material, rates)
- incentives
- competitions
- activation of new/specific publishers
..depending on the sector. This can result in a raise in sales and suddenly a peak, like mentioned above. But we experienced this development requires well-timed action.

Never cuss again, when it's raining ;)
