Hi All

A colleague has received a text from 60440 saying she has been subscribed to Nextcard Ltd and they have debited £4. The text includes a phone number 020 328 63990 which doesn't work. She keeps her phone with her and has not signed up for anything.

She googled Nextcard Ltd and went to their website and then her computer flashed up that it was open to virus/trojans, etc, which she is reporting to the IT department.

Does anyone know who Nextcard are? Does anyone have legitimate contact details for them? Any other info much appreciated.

Many thanks

Lynn

Thanks, Mike - we found that.

Hi,
I just checked on the Companies House website for you and there is no registered company called NextCard Limited.

Thank you.

Kind Regards

James

I checked that first.

It's a massive scam - beware! Your mobile phone account is deleted with no prior warning. My colleague has dialled the freephone number her mobile phone provider gave her (she doesn't know the name but they're some sort of regulatory body) and they are having a crisis meeting about it right now.

This is a massive scam, the monies are being collected by Ericsson IPX and they somehow have allowed a 'none' company (Nextcard) to have access to the payment system. I have been following this on blogs and postings in UK and Spain and it's huge! £4 to some people may seem like a nuisance and written off to experience, hence no action from them. But to many, many, young people who's messages I have seen this is a big blow. Anyone reading this, do not open a text identified as 60440, you will be charged. If you are, contact your network provider, they must refund you, do not be fobbed off. OFCOM (the mobile phone dept) are now looking at this, but Ericsson IPX must explain itself.

Ericsson IPX by the way are not the phone manufacturer, they are a huge business acting as a 'clearing house' for network providers (Orange, 02, Vodafone etc) if a thief can access their payment/collection system they can clean up big style. This has the potential to be a huge story, yet so far the agencies I have contacted seem to be rather blase' about it.

I received a text today stating that that £4 would be deducted from my account for a purchase I made in December. I know I made no purchase from this company and immediately checked with my provider and was amazed to find that £4 had been deducted to a third party through Orange. I spoke to one of Orange's representatives who very helpful and this amount has been refunded to me. How many other people have had this text today and been charged a similar amount without noticing!!!! Well done Orange anyway and I will be getting on the phonepayplus tomorrow to report this.

apparently these numbers are known as short code
Ericsson IP sells these numbers to clients who harvest your number - and use it thus

how harvest number? you have responded to advert or phone in

only phone in i ever responded to using mobile was two fridays ago stv 'dancing on ice'

i got the £4 text 5 days later

unless someone is harvesting numbers from cv's

proably these occurrences should be reported to police which would alert them to the problem of fraud and help them with their enquiries

My friend says they have never voted for any TV show.

Info my friend has been given is that it looks as if some systems have been hacked.

OFCOM are now investigating. Just be careful about opening text messages.

Ok, so a large number of people have been the vcitims of this fraud. O2 is my provider and they have "as a goodwill gesture" refunded the £4 charged to my account.

They also asked me to report the incident to the overseeing government agency that seemingly monitors this kind of situation. They gave me the number 0800 500 212 to call. I did this and was given a reference number. What concerns me is that both 02 and the Agency were well informed about the matter and much confirmed what others have posted on this site. The lack of concern and "symathy" was very evident although there was an acknowledgement of a huge number of complaints. But why has this matter not been publised more widely? How many people will pay the £4 without realising that they have been duped?

I agree

Actually O2 have been phoning me quite regularly to tempt me to change my ISP -

When I phoned to ask for resolution I was also given number but not the £4
I ask why they though I should consider changing my ISP if they couldn't even protect me from this fraud
