new website

What type of site are you interested in?

If its just a company site then theres little need to go local.

If its a bespoke project then having the agency near by can help.

Google is a good place to start, or a directory such as freeindex which offers company reviews, which I'm assuming is what your after, a referral for a good provider.

We have a company near us called Visualsoft that does a good job for many companies.

Have a look at their website and their online portfolio to see if thats the sort of thing you're after? Excellent advice and support given and no I don't work for them.

I agree with leadbuyuk. It really depends on what you want, budget, timescale etc. There are lots of good companies out there but likewise lots of companies that are too willing to take your hard earned cash for shoddy work.

Before agreeing on any company it's always worth having a very clear brief of what you want and what you expect.

I am a web designer myself, and i have seen so many clients paying more than they need to becuase they havent done their homework or have just gone with a recommended company or the first one they have found.

If you need anymore help with this then let me know. I will be glad to help.

pretty much does if you search a service + location, lol
Actually, it returns a localised listing of companies.

checking the 1st page's results (first 10 results) from google i think the best web designers in stafford seem to be:

* http://www.the-red-box.co.uk
* http://www.rakemark.com
* http://www.webcro.co.uk (not sure because they hide their public portfolio, and their web server is so slow)

From the sounds of your reply you're offering a recommendation on companies you've only just located in Google?

hey i found a website called www.google.co.uk. you just type in a product or service you are looking for and it returns results based on your search!

Its a good you told me that, i never thought of trying this google you speak of.

If you can't tell i'm being very sarcastic!!!!!!!!!!!

In my line of work people like to get recommendations off other people, i believe its called an active reference! and it's the best way to get new business.

I just thought there maybe somebody in this forum who could recommend someone in my area who they knew did a good job and weren't too over priced, i've had a quote already and it was very high.

Some very strange replies to this thread...

A good ranking on a google search does not make a company or individual worthy of recommendation. Ok, they're probably quite good at SEO, as web design is a very competitive search term, but what are they like to work with? Do they offer good value for money? Do they understand your area of business?

The OP is right to hold out for a personal recommendation. When it comes to a trade like web design which has 3 cowboys/ amateurs to every serious professional, it's the only way.

not easy to fake a good portfolio though. and i wasn't suggesting the 3 i picked out were the very best in stafford, but they surely are in a small elite group considering they're the 3 best of the 10 highest-ranked. remember that high rankings in search engines doesn't mean ur the best technician but it does go a long way to saying how well developed & stable & trusted (by google at least) ur organisation (or website at least) is.

You'd be surprised how often I've seen rogue designers 'borrow' a top quality portfolio of work from a decent designer, and blatantly display it on their website.
And I don't think you can hold much sway at all by google rankings. A top ranking site may be poorly coded, but long established; run by people who don't care much for their clients, just for the money.
A personal recommendation in our industry makes google redundant. People generally want to meet you and get an idea of what kind of person you are, that's what's most important to them, provided of course that you can competently make a website.

yes. good point. this should of course be checked in detail. my advice was just a way-pointer to start with

but google's is far from redundant, it's the most popular site in the world, because it's very useful, because it's very successful. ok, so it's only the first step, and more detailed personal checks come next, but that can be well done from the starting point of finding the best few by appearances out of the top 10 in google

I don't dispute that google is a great site - just saying it's not perfect for everything. And in my opinion, it's not brilliant for finding a web designer. A personal recommendation is much better to the average business owner.
I see your point about checking the top 10 and going on appearances, but it's still a risky game. Appearances can be misleading, and anyone who's ever bought a website is aware that you're not just paying for appearances. You're buying service, advice, maintenance, usability and accessibility too.

well if you want a web host, a total web solutions provider, then sure, appearances are less useful. i was thinking personally as a web developer who just hires designers now and again for their graphical contribution
That does make a big difference! I always understand a web designer to be someone who designs websites - that includes graphics, code, database etc etc.
If we'd been talking about web developers perhaps we'd have had more to agree on :)

The same as, I know somebody who asked for a web site design and got a PSD file. A Web Designer is somebody who makes websites and then a developer is more the backend stuff.

Just my 2p.

yea, and the hosting is a different thing again. i don't distinguish so much between design and development, because even backend databases involve design work, but i do distinguish between design work and the admin stuff like hosting, maintenance, simple updates etc.

Hi there,

I'm looking for a logo designer, not an entire web design package. There have been mentions in this thread of several top 10 google listed companies which seem to be of decent quality.

I've searched on google for custom logo design and so far these are the standout options based on my price range:

crea8ivedesign dot com

$99 for 1 logo, 4 concepts, unlimited revisions

thelogoloft dot com

$99 for 1 logo, 1 concept, 1 revision

logobench dot com

$99 for 1 logo, 2 concepts, 1 revision

logo-genie dot com

$89 for 1 logo, 2 concepts, unlimited revisions

logomonsters dot net

$49 for unlimited logos, unlimited concepts, unlimited revisions

Based on the work shown, they appear to have the skill required to create the logo I have in my head, but I put it to you, has anyone out there dealt with any of these companies or can you suggest any others that you've dealt with personally? If so, can you tell me what exactly you liked/disliked about them?

Thanks in advance,

Sam.
