I don't think the title tag is measured by characters but by width so pixel length - and I think a good/well thought out value proposition like others mentioned will do a world of good.

I think some forget CTR and Click Backs are ranking factors so it's not all about trying to squeeze as many keywords into the title as possible - I think Ali mentioned earlier in the thread about not using the back button but closing the window instead. I tend to click though a few of the pages as well and sometimes leave the tab open for a long time on site.

I'll throw this into the mix as well - increase Google author rank, should help out with on-site blogging, guest blogging and most content syndication - infographics etc when your looking for better rankings. I'm sure some will have something to say about that assumption.
