hello,
I am a small start up waste removal and commercial and residential clearance company in north London and would like to ask for any advice possible please. I have applied for a waste carrier license and have purchased a transit van and registered my company name, I haven't as yet established where to dispose of waste or costs and wanted to ask for advice to be aware of Do's and Dont's, any jargon I should be aware of. I would like to be able to recycle most of rubbish collected for environmental reasons.

please any advice is appreciated

thanks
Jane

The market research into where you can dispose of the rubbish/recycling and costs of doing so should definitely have come before buying a van and getting a license. As stated above a business plan and budget would have helped you understand whether you have a feasible business model before you went ahead with buying a van and getting a license.

In terms of do's - you need a business plan, market research and budget.

How do you know what your costs are and what to charge your customers to make it profitable for you if you don't know the costs of use using the council tip?

How do you know who your competitors are and what you can do that is different/better? Lots of people offer a van and a man type services for waste disposal - so it's a crowded market place - unfortunately some just fly-tip what they collect.

How do you know how market your business to your target customers and the costs involved in doing so?

You may not get much work with your unique angle (woman, recycling, environment), but you may get enough lucrative work from hippy dippy North London yummy mummies that it''s profitable for you.

Bear in mind that almost all waste companies claim to recycle a high percentage of their waste- they simply pay the gate fee to tip at a sorting station, and let a gang of Eastern Europeans pick through it.

Your strength will not be in doing this yourself. Your strength will be in convincing the North London faux eco warrior that you , a woman, passionately care about the environment, and are different and therefore worth the extra.

Then you go and tip it up at the sorting station with all the other waste clearance companies.

I may sound facetious but I'm deadly serious.
