New Motherboard - any thoughts ?

Any ideas on what is the latest best value motherboard out there.
Needs 32GB ram, sata (using Raid 1 or 5) and a quad core processor (what type ?)

I intend to use it as a main PC but also to run various Virtual Machines for training eg Windows Hyper V , SQL server, Windows SCCM etc , I'm a biot behind the latest developments in MBs and processors

Personally I wouldnt go for a "value" motherboard if you are running that kind of hardware on it.

Also, What kind of CPU are you looking at? This will determine the motherboard..

all appear to be dual core, OP wants quad core

I have put off a purchase until the new year ( new car exhaust has killed my budget)
I also realised that I will have to spend about £400
£150 MB , £150 fast quad core CPU, 16gb ram, plus power supply. I also wont be bothering with AMD chips - even though their Kaveri chips are coming in Jan 2014 - it seems Intel are still ahead of the game

I would look at the Haswell I5 4670K. Look for an 1150 Socket Motherboard that can handle 32GB of ram as not all can. Ram is around £100 for 16GB just now so if the Mobo only has two ram slots get a single chip instead of two so you can upgrade more later. Don't buy a cheap power supply.

I personally wouldn't use RAID 5 on a PC, maybe if you were really wanting it then use hardware RAID. Think of maybe RAID10 if you can stretch to it.

If you've got a budget of around £200 for other system bits, you could look at an AMD APU - http://www.novatech.co.uk/search.html?s=apu these are cheaper as they include the GPU on the CPU (as opposed to being a separate piece of kit).

The big downside is that they're not all that powerful, however the flip side is they're damn cheap. Worth a look (Motherboards are also in that link as well so have a look around )
