Recently purchased a Dell 17 inspiron and I like it a lot. The screen is huge and a little to big, I think, if you are actually going to carry it around. If you are going to use it as desktop replacement then it is fine and there are smaller screen versions if you want one.

Hi Kerry,

Some of the deals on the Dell website are great - I struggle sometimes to compete and sometimes point my customers in that direction so they get the best deal. (Im not paid any commsion by them !!! lol )

Hey Rusty

Whats your budget?
There are alot of laptops to choose from.
I would say though if it is for web design and graphic work, I would suggest something with a good amount of ram (4gb) and at least a dual core processor plus a half decent graphics card, not an onboard one.
Again depends on what you want to do as you could get away with 2 to 3gb ram and onboard graphics card.

Also are you going to be carry the laptop around everywhere? If so I wouldn't buy bigger than a 15.6inch (basically 15.4 size). Plus if you require long battery time, some of the more expensive laptops with the smaller screen sizes like 13inch or so state they have longer battery life.

Hey Rusty,

If your current Dell is fine, but is running like a fat pig with Vista with 2gb of ram. Perhaps either reinstall Vista or get Windows 7. Windows 7 with 2gb ram will run a lot quicker than Vista.
Perhaps this could be a cheaper alternative New Battery and Win 7 :)

Thanks Raf for your thoughts, very helpful.

No the Dell is not really fine, I gave it a cup of coffee and it didn't like it much, now the mousepad doesn't work properly, which is not a problem working on the desk with a proper mouse but becomes a pain when your in transit and have to take the mouse everywhere with you.

Yes, I definitely want to upgrade to Windows 7.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Since i'm a Dell reseller, if you find the model you want and forward me the spec (a PDF of the finalised spec from their website is best) we can usually beat their website prices.

Incidentally, the "running like a stuffed pig" will be your software. I'd suggest from a blind guess that you've been sold an "all in one" antivirus and firewall package from Symantec or McAfee or the like? and this is what's slowing you down.

Thanks Dawg, maybe next year!!

Had a look around over the weekend and now am thinking of getting an all in one pc, not quite a laptop but without all the cables and space needed for a desktop. We already have one big computer so this would be a second one more for tweaking and stuff. The only criteria is that it needs to run a second monitor.

Would love to hear any opinions and recommendations, at the moment the Dell all in one looks favourite.
