New business

Hi - been recommended this site by a regular here, so thought I would introduce myself and my business.

Just launched Ticker Badges and, as the name says, am hoping to sell LED scrolling badges to individuals and businesses such as pubs and restarants.

My web site is http://www.tickerbadges.co.uk and I would appreciate any feed back.

Cheers

John

Hi John

Welcome to the forums.

I am sure you will find it full of great info and contacts.

We have had some interest in this type of badge in the past and I will keep you in mind next time it happens.

Best of luck with your business and dont hesitate to get in touch if we can help you out in anyway.

Interesting!

Some time ago I sold a few DIY LCD name badges on ebay, you basically plugged it into a pc's serial port (I never got round to implementing USB), downloaded the message that you wanted for eg "VISITOR - JOHN SMITH" and it downloaded onto a PIC in the badge itself (a PIC is a basically small single chip computer for those that dont know)
I have considered the posibility of having a look at this again in the future but the price of components unless I buy a lot is a limiting factor, as is a custom made enclosure. Besides, all my limited funds are going on my IT business.
Hope it takes off for you, I'm sure there is a market out there for them.

Many thanks for all your warm replies.

I was a bit nervous having been warned that you sometimes rip new websites to pieces!

I hope to be a helpful part of the forum in the future and I'm sure I will learn a lot from you guys.

Great product!

I think I could use something like that at a show, as you have indicated. Although, I wouldn't need ten.

One thing though. You might want to consider getting a USB cable update to your product as soon as possible. No modern computer carries serial ports anymore. They are becoming rarer, as you may see in Dixons etc.

And you will need to provide some kind of adapter, from say maplin electronics to allow it to be programmed.

Fortunately, many still are using older computers with serial ports.

Many regards

Hi and Welcome

Just checked your website and I like the badges. However, imagine if you had a member of staff with a wicked sense of humour, they could reprogramme the messages to say something rude. Or what about someone working their last day for you!

ITs a total pain the fact that some computers and most laptops come without a serial port, laptops in particular, dont manufacturers realise that although for the average user there may not be a requirement for a com port, what about IT profesionals, swithces, routers, printers etc etc still have serial ports which are required for configuring the device. There are USB to serial adapters available, some are good, some are not but I think in the case of this product any would be ok - and certainly 100000 times easier than implementing USB, I assume these badges use a PIC or similar ?

I hate the idea of a pc without a floppy as well, ok you can boot from cd, and now many can boot from a usb pen drive, but I still sometimes find the need to boot from a good old floppy, for one thing, if using diagnostics from a boot cd, how can you write a log file to it !

Sorry it's taken me so long to come back to you all, but I have been looking into the possibility of supplying USB rather than serial cables.

At the moment, it will have to stay as it is, and it would be up to the user to buy a serial to USB converter if required, but I hope we can change this in the near future.

I suppose we could always add a USB converter as an added option, but it would just push up prices and I wouldn't want to do that!

Cheers

Hey there, welcome to the forums.

I think theres a sizeable market in your products as prize medals at competitions of all kinds. Basically the event holder just programs in the winners name and position (+any other appropriate details) and awards the winner with the medal. Obviously this would require some kind of skin for each event to "personalise" the medals.

Heres an example of a medal made for the "robogames" tournament in the US.
