If you are setting up a PR business, once you have identified your target markets and why your customers should work with you (rather than your competitors) I would use your PR skills to develop a measurable marketing and PR plan for your business that identifies the best channels and activities to use to reach those businesses that you have identified as your target market.

i'm from a sales background but have been set up as a self employed pr sales

Sorry I don't quite understand what you mean by PR sales?

Do you mean you want to sell the services of PR agencies to their customers?

If so, I would use your sales skills to get a foot in the door so you can demonstrate how you can use your skills to sell their services to their customers.

It is really difficult to advise you @Fionn lynch as you aren't providing any information on the type of sales you want to do or your background.

A key part of sales is being able to communicate well.

If you don't know how to develop a sales/marketing strategy for your business, then I would suggest you pay a marketing person with experience of sales in the PR sector to help you develop one.

Why? Do you know much about PR or sales?
I worked in door to door sales and have had experience with telesales but have been told to stick to Linkedin.

OK, what are they providing you with?

It appears that you're working commission only, with no training/support/b2b sales experience to sell a service you don't understand.
commission only, no hands on support, I have b2b sales experience selling stationery, it's help with like posters, blog support, podcasts and some analytics. I am new and haven't got my head round the services yet.

Hopefully you are really self employed, not an employee told you are self employed to cost yourself money in order to work.

So you work when you want, turn up when you want, go when you want, take holidays when you want. Wear own clothing as you wish?
You use own equipment, drive own vehicle when need to drive.
And you bill the business regularly with an invoice for your services.

If however you are expected to act like an employee then odds are you are an employee.

Self employed don't get sick pay, holiday pay, pension contribution from employer, and you get to pay your own tax and NI. Hopefully you are invoicing the company for over a hundred pounds a day for your services.

You get paid Commission. That is it in a nutshell. I'm treating it as a full time job because you would not make ends meet any other way. Been told off for short posting but don't want to over complicate it. I am being asked to act like an employee and work on a self employed basis in the short term at least.

I probably should of just asked how to get customers through Linkedin but this is my first post so it has probably agitated a few people.

I'm somewhat perplexed by this thread... but I shall try and add some meaningful input...

Do a job you like and enjoy. If you know nothing about PR, you're being hoodwinked into being on 'commission only' and really dodging HMRC, and helping your employer do so (it speaks volumes about them and their approach) I would get the hell out of there.

Get a job where you are valued and supported properly and not settle for a situation like you find yourself in, again!

@Fionn lynch the answers you have got here have been brief and sometimes cynical - That's because your early questions & responses were brief and unengaged.

If you want to get good answers on a forum you need to ask good questions, give good information and be engaged.

Exactly the same goes for selling your services; engage with people & show interest in them; be generous with information in the results will follow.
