Hi guys,

I dont know if i'm posting this in the right area, but it seemed as good a place to start as any!

I have been on Job seekers for the past 3/4 months but have now started up a Ltd company.

I have spoken to three people at the job centre now and no one knows what is supposed to happen with regards to me being able to claim any benefit. I know i cant sign on for job seekers because i'm not looking for a job but i cant find out if i'm entiteld to any benefits - they certinaly don't know at the job centre.

I'm married and my wife works full time. I also have my own house which is mortgaged.

Does anyone know if i can claim any form of benefit?

If you have no kids and depending on your total hosuehold income try for working tax credits. If you are not getting a wage yet then you may be entitled to this. Also housing and council tax benefit, but only if total income is low. Are you expecting to start earning a wage from day 1?

Thanks for getting back to me. When i signed on to jobseekers i tried to get a reduction in council tax but we were turned down as they said there was too much money coming into the household. My wife is on an ok wage but i can tell you that it’s been a real struggle with just me getting £67.50 a week. My mother (god bless her) has been helping out.

I actually did my first training yesterday so i will be invoicing them today, so i guess yes i have actually started trading.

You can apply for working tax credit which is means tested so whether you get any will depend on your wife's income and your anticipated income from your business.
If you also have children, then you can apply for child tax credits as well (think they are actually on the same form as for working tax credits but been a while since I filled one in). Again this is means tested so depends on your income figures.
Worth putting in the form and seeing - every little helps (as they say).

Its a long shot, but you could ask the bob centre to be placed on the NEA scheme.


A long shot because it is aimed at those who have been on ob seekers for 6 months or more - still, its worth asking.

Under the scheme, you will get access to a mentor and your Job seekers will be commuted to a different allowance which will reduce over the next 6 months.

You might also qualifty for a £1000 start up loan

Its worth asking.
