Hi all I have just registered with this forum and it looks fab with some great advise. I just need alittle info please I am about to start a new business as a sole trader but I don't want to trade under my own name I have chosen a business name I like but do I have to get it registered and do I have to make sure no body else has already got the name please.

You can use any name to trade as long as it is not TradeMarked!

Thank you for your help I have looked on all the google name checkers and it says the name is available. So I am ok to go ahead without getting it registered seems alot of money some of the companies are charging to register a name?

By-the-way, if you choose to register the name as a limited company, just do it yourself at the companies house website... it'll only cost you £15. You might also want to double check the name using companies house webCheck service... note that if the LTD is taken, you can opt for LIMITED!

Read this. Note that you will have to disclose your own name and business name on any official paperwork like invoices or letters.

note that if the LTD is taken, you can opt for LIMITED!

For comparing company names Ltd and Limited are disregarded, so you can't normally do what you suggest. See this.

What I meant is xyz LTD and xyz Limited are two different entities...
