Never expected that

Possibly the biggest misjudgement I ever made in a phone call...

Generally speaking when I do sales calls I have a pretty good ballpark on what size a company might be and how much cash it may produce.

Tonight NOPE spoke to a guy i thought, niche product area and not really progressed much past the start up although he has some decent US based distribution.

Guy drops a line

We sell right now 1.8 million units a year and if we can find a way to solve a marketing problem we could take this to 4 million units (Each unit is around 200usd and cost will be no more than 50usd probably less)

Feel guilty for taking an hour of his time, with 30mins for tomorrow also, this post is purely aftershock, the website is nothing special, he is not a household name but the company is almost disguised from the public..

To save you doing the maths, his Gross profit is around a million a day (He is the sole owner)

Just a little blown away that this apparently little company is actually an incredible money machine, seriously looking forward to tomorrows chat..

Yes, I know the feeling, though not quite so impressive. One of my clients operated out of their home, no visible signs of a major business, home made website, but they made half a million per year. Another had a tatty back street shop and a crappy old van but made over £100k p.a. Sometimes I think that "success" is inversely proportional to public image, especially when I visit a business with plush offices, Porsches outside, and look at their accounts to see that they're actually loss making! Image can be so deceptive sometimes.

Because "Never judge the rewards of a potential business partnership by the marketing and / or physical presence of a company without first assessing the true market share and accurate turnover of said business in relation to current market trends" ... just isn't as catchy ;)

I had an email from someone wanting to buy my product to use in some concoction they had made in their kitchen that they were about to start selling.
Was about to ignore with a polite brush off when I thought I had better check the website - turned out to be a 500 store operation that liked to call its R+D dept their Kitchen !

Flash offices and a flash car may look like a sign of success, but don't always be drawn in, its often all on finance and often won't be there in 3yrs time. Flash often means no cash!
