Hi Desmond,

Thank you for your post. Advertisers can either promote their businesses via an article for a reduced rate or a straight forward advert. We do not pay for article submission however a byline credit is given to the contributor.

If you're interestd in contributing please don't hesitate to contact me via the website or via this forum.

Thank you.

I, regrettably, can't afford to write for nothing

No, me neither I'm afraid :-(

Just out of interest, Publisher, do you mind if I ask why you don't pay for articles? I'm assuming you'll be paying for printing, typesetting, distribution etc - why not for editorial?

I'm not trying to start an argument by the way, just genuinely interested as the being-asked-to-work-for-free thing seems to be be quite peculiar to my particular industry. It would be helpful to understand your reasoning :)

Great question Amber, there's been a few posts like this recently.

It seems that more and more people want the knowledge and wisdom built up over years of experience for nothing - and it's a bit of cheek really.

You wouldn't ask a plumber to change the washers in your taps for nothing, why ask writers to write for nothing?

Hi,

Thank you for your post and apology if we've not been here for a while.

Some of our contributors and experts are willing to offer their services for a return of free promotion so its not exactly that they're offering their services for nothing because each time they provide their services their business is also being promoted.

We have an advertorial type articles where businesses submit an advert for their business via an article.

We have paid articles and some articles which have been contributed in return of free advertising.

Hope the above helps and thank you for your responses.

Just to add, our rates start at just £35 per month. Very cost effective compare to other newspaper and magazine advertising.

Regards.

Good point.

Is about quality as well. You might be able to get free content, but it won't be of the highest standard - and it does show. Professional writers need to get paid. We pay a huge amount of money for the content on our sites and the result is that people return to them time and time again. We get teenagers asking to submit film reviews etc. for free, but turn them down as their standard of writing is not world-class. If you have the highest standards, you'll succeed.

Good luck with your new enterprise :)

I completely agree. I would also question who exactly will want to read what is essential just a series of adverts (given that your contributors will be writing purely in order to advertise their businesses). When I worked in newspaper journalism, our advertisers would call and complain if there were too many adverts in the paper because they knew that ultimately it's the editorial content that sells a publication. If there are too many adverts the readership drops sharply and advertisers get a much smaller return on their investment - to the point where it is no longer worth their while advertising in the first place.

What you seem to be developing is a publication which consists solely of adverts - both paid for adverts and free advertorials, written by amateur writers. Hopefully you have a very good editor to make sure this can be turned into material that people will actually want to read!

All of this said, though, you obviously know your product much better than I do, and I'm sure you will have already thought of this, so good luck with it all :)
