Need to switch to a new payment gateway

We've been using Papal for the last 5 years.... and following a catalogue of unresolved issues with them, we now desperately need to look for a new provider.... but we are having one fundamental issue... Instant Payment Notification. Having trawled through past threads on here and checked various websites, I can't find any mention of IPN. Is it called something else? Or is it a feature that they all have so they don't mention it. It is essential for us to have this as our site is fully automated (so that we can earn money while asleep or on holiday!).

Hi

If your t/o is circa £ 400 - £ 500 PCM we can offer you a Payment Gateway and Merchant account
that would be far cheaper to operate than anything provided by PayPal, also the solution will provide you immediate payment authorisation notification through the management system, and the resultant funds would then be deposited to your nominated Bank account within 4 - 5 business days.

The service starts at approx. £ 33 PCM (Gateway and Merchant account), if you would like to discuss further please PM me.

Hi Sandy, you should look at all your options for a merchant account and payment gateway. Your merchant account fees very much depend on the nature of your business. Many payment gateways have this IPN offering and many also give you a number of free transactions per month. For example, Cardstream's payment gateway is one of the most competitive at £18 a month which includes 350 free transactions and a virtual terminal for mail and telephone orders.

I've already had a looky at the cardstream website. I found it on Saturday. The support and sales number is only Mon to Fri which immediately worried us as most of our problems seem to occur at the weekend. The nature of our business is the weekend is our busiest time!. I trawled that site and couldn't find any mention of IPN, hence why I asked the question here. I found loads of sites....but not one mentioned IPN. I'd be happy to have a chat with you though.

As far as I'm aware, any gateway should provide you with an instant payment notification. Gateways process the payments in real time, so they can send an immediate confirmation back to your e-commerce software whether it was successful or not - it wouldn't be much use if it didn't do that.

Worldpay sends an e-mail as soon as the payment is taken - for me, it arrives at the same time as the e-mail from my e-commerce software notifying me of the order. I believe Sagepay does the same.

In fact, in some cases, I've noticed a delay of a few minutes before I receive the notification for a Paypal payment, but there's never a delay for Worldpay payments.

We have started to use https://stripe.com/gb as of this week, implementing in a new custom coded on-line shop we have in build - and what we have seen so far is very impressive. The mega feature is how you can accept credit cards within site and without needing to be PCI compliant - all thanks to some clever coding in a stripe.js file. An SSL is needed but that's good practice anyway and that's nothing compared to having to struggle for PCI compliance - something I understand is difficult - if not near impossible with cloud server hosting - which many on-line shops use these days.

Also according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stripe_(company) Stripe has some impressive investors including some PayPal founders and in particular Elon Musk CEO of Tesla Cars & founder of SpaceX.

Finally an interview with Stripe co-founder Patrick Collison is well worth watching if you have the time.

Whoops - I made an error in my above post and its too late to edit now. I should have said "The mega feature is how you can accept credit cards within site and without the server your site is on needing to be PCI compliant" Needless to say your business still needs to be PCI compliant and all you might need is a self assessment as described at https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/merchants/self_assessment_form.php

Just going to pick up on this as various others have jumped in on the main issue! Typically yes - I've seen it called all sorts of things - IPN, Webhooks, Callbacks - every gateway uses the term they feel best describes it, really.

The vast majority (when talking about 'redirect' payment solutions where you send the customer to them to make the payment, and then they send them back) provide you with something similar - and/or automatically redirect the client to you, so you don't get the "uncompleted transaction" problem which happens with PayPal sans IPN.
