Hello

Sorry for all the questions recently but i am very new to this business malarki so a but unsure on some things.

Basically i have decided to start my on card and stationery company (Making personalised birthday, wedding christmas etc cards and stationery)

I have finally decided on a name look around using google and it appears its not being used anywhere even in a different field. Ive also check out 123reg to check there is a website available which there is in co.uk and .com.

However, im in the very early i have made some cards that seem to have taken well and i have a few people that have already asked me to make some for them. Currently i havent taken any money as yet, but wanted to do so when it came to christmas orders.

So my first questions is should i infrom the HMRevenue now? make them aware that i will be taking money. I will only have no more than around 8ish maybe 10 orders a month at arounf £3 each so would they need to do this as i want to do it buy the book. How does it work? Will i not have to pay fees and tax if i dont take any orders as in the early stages i have a feeling orders could be on and off?

My second question is, i know what name i want and as i said have found that there is a website available, but i do not feel its a the stage where im ready to go down this route yet, i want to make sure that im getting regular orders and it takes off before buying a website etc, but is there anything i can do to secure the name i have choosen as i have put the name on the orders i have done to get the name about and dont want to risk loosing it so to speak before i get website etc. I dont want to risk having to change a name that is already reconised. Does having a website secure your name, would it be best to buy the website now even though i wont use it for at least 6 months?

Any help would be apprichated!

Many Thanks
Nikki

You dont need to tell the tax man yet, I think your worrying to much.

You wont even make your tax code at that income level. Which means you wont have tax to pay, your on a small scale they wont be interested in your activities.

You will simply have to fill out a tax return before the end of the tax year which states your earnings.

If you have a good domain name then buy it before someone else does, put a keyword in it though like stationary or cards you will be glad you did if you manage to get big enough. Use the .co.uk but buy the .com also.
