Go on the Magento website, click on the Screencast tab under Resources. Scroll down and you'll see the screencast re Configurable Products. You'll need to do the Creating a Simple Product and Creating and Managing Attributes screencasts first.

If you are on the 1.1.2 version than u can create the sizes in custom options which is quicker.

I'm on a slightly older version of Magento, which therefore makes it impossible to upgrate to the faster, better version, without completely messing up the site that I've spent a lot of time and money on developing. Not sure how they can call it an upgrade when you can only use the newer version if you are just starting out with Magento.

have u made changes to the app folder or the skin folder?

Why not just redo the changes?
On the other hand if you don't require the new features than there is not much point upgrading.

I've got a new theme. When I upgraded to the latest magento product descriptions disapeared and I went from 9 products per page displaying to 1. I have no coding knowledge at all, so I reverted to my backup.

The only feature I require in the new version is the speed! My site is very slow and I've been on test versions of the upgrade and it's a lot quicker.

I'm wondering if server setup has as much effect on site speed as the version of Magento?

I'm still running V1.0, and my site speed seems fine; as quick as some at the latest version?

(I'm not bragging in any way, I make no claim to having set anything wonderfully well - all the server stuff was done for me. Just an observation really.)

Stampy - nice skinning & theming work on sentient clothing!

I am watching the 'upgrade debate' with interest. I anticipate that I too will have some serious grief when I upgrade (due to custom themes etc).

That's what you get for being an early adopter .....

THanks for the feedback Tempus. I've been given a "foolproof" method of upgrading to the latest version, which I'm going to try at the end of the week. If it works I'll be more than happy to share it.

bhavz007 - it's not that I'm not willing to help, it's just that I'm not a coder, I'm a shop owner, and I wouldn't be comfortable doing even basic work on someone elses site. I'm sure if you go through the screencasts on adding attributes and products you'll figure it out. This will help a lot when you have to add other products as well.

Your other option would be to go somewhere like Rentacoder and pay some $50 to do it for you.

Hi,

To get sizes on the earlier version you need to create configurable products then add simple products which are connected to them. Custom options in the new version (1.1+) is a far better way of doing it.

Re: the upgrade, I've gone through the pain of upgrading to 1.1.1 then 1.1.2 (I thought might aswell do both) - it's not too bad once you realise the upgrade provided by Magento is complete flawed, and affects everyone differently! I'm not sure there could be a flaw-proof way of doing it - as all depends what aspects of your theme you have touched.

I did sort it though, took me about 15 hours for each site. My new sites are much faster than the old ones, especially around the admin side, so I reckon it was worth the effort. I wont be moving to another version in a hurry though.

Rgds

How do i do this? Im running version 1.1.3 now, installed it as soon as it released. How abouts do I create the configurable products through the custom options?

Hello FF,

I just added a product to the cart and it took about 23 seconds, so it's not that quick.
Is it you, me, the web, time of day, ISPs or what? I just checked and the product I picked was in the cart in less than three seconds ....
If it is taking 23 seconds then I need to get that fixed.

I am planning to upgrade ASAP - url re-writes from Magento are giving me the hump. The current version that I am running seems to do some random re-writing of older urls when I add new products - this plays havoc with your sitemap and Google indexing!!

Stampy,

Did you do the deed yet?
I've been given a "foolproof" method of upgrading to the latest version, which I'm going to try at the end of the week.
If so, how'd it go?

Re: these tricky upgrades in Magento, which may break your themes and require lots of hours to sort out; I wonder if it's worth paying Magento/Varien to do it?

No idea what they'd charge, but I know that they were promoting their support contracts. Given that the Magento ecommerce software itself is free, and that their main means of monetising their product is through bought support it might be worth investigating further?

Maybe they would give the setup a once-over and do some basic optimisation too?

Maybe that would deliver some payback?

Firefox 3.01 on windows XP, ISP is BTOpenworld 2 meg connection, just tested at 10pm on a Monday night.
Just added a t-shirt to the shopping cart twice - both times it was about 50 seconds to add them.

We've got our websites in a twist - no T-shirts on my website.
Whose website are you testing?
Check my signature.
My V1.0 site is full of CCTV cameras and bits - take it for a spin and let me know how you get on by all means ......

Yes, you are correct, my mistake. I was testing www.sentientclothing.co.uk which as skampy says is very slow. Your CCTV site is pretty nippy.
