Hello guys,

I have calculated my VAT and I am ready to submit my first VAT return. I am using VitalTax to submit VAT digitally. The software only allows me to grab data from my spreadsheet.
Since this is my first VAT return I will also be claiming input VAT. My question is where do I send the invoices which I have collected for input VAT claim to prove my claim is accurate ?

I apologise in advance if my question is stupid.

When you submit your return YOU are certifying that they are accurate.

You don't send them anywhere, you keep them for at least 6 years. The VAT office will decide to check up on you with an inspection either at random of if something looks odd in your numbers.

If they discover inaccuracies, then you may / will get fined additional amounts depending on the level of error. HMRC can charge you a penalty of up to 100% of any tax under-stated or over-claimed if you send a return that contains a careless or deliberate inaccuracy.

    Hi James

Not a stupid question at all. I know your question has already been answered but you may find it helpful to have a read here on the HMRC website where it explains about VAT record keeping https://www.gov.uk/vat-record-keeping
